Apparently there's a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! concerning the new sound of F1 and though it is pretty much established that evolution = F1 and it is not the show that should define Grand Prix racing, the audio experience of Formula One has been on a downward spiral since Ferrari bid farewell to its !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at the end of the 1995 season.

All of those looking for some screaming N/A sound in open-seaters must be highly disappointed in F1, so here are some series you should check out in need for ear protection as a must.

Auto GP should be one of the best sounding series currently, a bit like F1of 2013 with a slightly lower rev limit. 3.4-litre Zytek V8 engines for the rescue. You can find it on EuropSport

Formula Renault 3.5 uses almost almost Zytek engines to the ones in Auto GP, only the cars look much nicer (something like an F1 car around 2004) and mainly sponsored by the same companies as F1, sou you'll get your Lotuses, Red Bulls, Caterhams, etc. Your choice of F1.

Something you won't catch on TV, but BOSS GP is probably the best ever racing series on Earth. "BOSS" stands for Big Open Single Seaters, and it is basically a Formula Libre thing with former F1, Champ Car, GP2, Formula3000, etc. cars lining up at the start line. Here's another video to convince you:

EDIT: I totally forgot to insert Formula Nippon as I got wound up watching mixed class of cars running around at Monza. Formula Nippon is ultra-cool because the cars sound like F1 ones, and look like CART vehicles from the nineties, with an added fugly front wing:

Was I the only one who heard Star Wars sound effects when watching F1 last weekend? The hybrid electric motors sounded like laser guns at certain points of the race. Which was kind of cool. But also not cool.

Thank you for that post. I muted the F-1 race and made my own engine noises in my head. I really do not like the "new F-1 experience". Oh well. It is what Bernie says it is.

I really don't have that much of an issue with the noise. We'll get used to it and then get over it like has happened with every other major rule change in the past. I missed the V10 era (Didn't get into F1 until college) but from what I have heard, the dB level dropped significantly when they went to the V8s. Its still the fastest open wheel series on earth and the strategy/tech is fun to watch.

My main wish with the V6s is that they'd add another 5k rpm to them and say screw the fuel rate bs unless they just limit line size and fuel pressure so they're rate limited rather than monitored.

I personally don't have a problem with them either, I watch it on TV, so it doesn't really matter for me. I watched it through the V10, even the 3.5-litre era with V8s, V10s and V12s, but honestly, I couldn't tell after quite a few years that what the e.g. V10 were like. I always get surprised how much louder and higher pitched those engines were when watching clips on YT.

Anyway, Formula E is coming up and I will be interested to see how people will react to the lack of noise.

Can't forget the GP2s. Not much slower than this year's F1 cars and a much more enjoyable soundtrack.

But not as much enjoyable soundtrack as these.

Formula Nippon is now called Super Formula. They have all new cars for 2014 (Dallara chassis, no more ugly wing, last year was a Swift chassis), and they have new powertrains which are turbocharged 2.0 liter I-4 with an energy recovery system; 550hp plus a 50hp KERS boost. These powertrains will be shared with Japan's GT-500 series (which by the way is conforming to DTM rules except for the powertrain). The previous powertrain was a 3.4L V8, normally aspirated.

Previous Super Formula cars were faster than Indycars on a road course.

Here is the new Super Formula car

Yes, I know and - believe it or not - I was just looking into it at this very moment, will sketch up a post about it later on.
