We're hitting all the big cities: Barcelona, Cordoba, Madrid, Seville, Costa del Sol, Porto, Lisbon, seems like everywhere lol, and though we're going with a tour group we have several hours a day of free time to explore the cities ourselves. Proper European karting is definitely on my list, but other than that our plans are wide open. Anyone been to either country and know of anything interesting or fun to do? Thank you ahead of time!

Sounds fun! I spend way too much time in Tarifa.

And no, It's not like Top Gear where everything is abandoned.

Avoid renting a car, the drivers are complete shit, and will hit you. Constantly.

Knowing Top Gear I didn't expect it to be. The tour group we're using was very matter-of-fact and and knowledgeable about Spain's economic situation, so it's not like we were expecting ghosts towns. I'll still be on the lookout for one if I stumble across a 458 or an R8 :P

The economy is still bad though. If you spend time in the south, I'd suggest Gibraltar and Morocco. Morocco is only about 30 minutes by ferry. Gibraltar is just a cool place.

I believe they are day trip options, and ones that I hope we make. Both seem like really neat places. We're going to be down south for a few days so I bet we'll squeeze in some time to go to both :)

Fantastic ... even with all the issues people still know how to have fun over there. In Seville (very traditional Spanish city) visit the Alcazar across from the Cathedral for some excellent Moorish architecture. The little cafe overlooking the gardens is very peaceful. Madrid has awesome museums and bars. Barcelona is an artistic hub with fantastic restaurants. I haven't visited the other cities in Spain or Portugal yet. Agree about not renting a car - all the cities are built for walking and the bigger ones have excellent mass transit (unless the workers go on strike!). On the Jalopnik/Oppo side try to visit some of the race circuits, there's bound to be at least one race while you're there (or a rally).

I love old architecture so the Alcazar will definitely get put on the list, that place looks so cool. Our hotel in Barcelona is near the Circuit de Catalunya so I'm hoping there will be something going on over the few days we're in the city. Thanks for the response!

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but first of all CONGRATS YOU WILL LOVE IT!

I was stationed at Sevilla/Morón for a while.

The roads between there and Gibraltar are AMAZING. (and if Gibraltar isn't on your itinerary, GO, it is life-changing)

Spend the extra $$$/debt and rent a nice sport-ish car. You will see why.

The speed traps, although very rare, can be nasty fines, so if you feel like driving "at pace" then make sure to session the road instead of just going flat out the first time through...

Hmm what else... if you are out anytime from 1330-1700, you will certainly stand out as a tourist, as everybody else will be asleep!

Dinner is late, and expect to spend a few hours.

Food is great. People are great. The economy is terrible BUT the culture/lifestyle/property revolves around family and money/things take second place. You will see some nice cars on occasion.

You won't want to come home.

I appreciate all the input I can get, man, thank you for the reply! Gibraltar is a day trip we're definitely planning on making, I've heard nothing but good things about it. And I have been entertaining the idea of taking a road trip around the Spanish riviera, we'll see what my parents let me do haha. Thanks again!
