Emphasis on highly modified.
You can do this with a regular helicopter, once. If you fly it after that, it will break and you will die.

It absolutely blew my mind that it's possible for helicopters to fly upside down. I didn't even realize it until I bought my first fully aerobatic R/C helo. It's actually not all that hard from an engineering perspective though... all they do is give the collective (the thing that adjusts the pitch of the rotor blades) equal amounts of up and down pitch. A normal helicopter just has neutral to positive collective, so the range between no lift and as much as the blade can produce without stalling.
