The EPA classifies it in the broad category called "light truck." The manufacturer calls it a crossover.
It's a car-based SUV. Therefore, it's a crossover, or CUV.

SUV. It's also gorgeous. Too bad it's insanely, terribly awful.

At Avis they classify it as an 'Upgrade'.

I agree on every point. They really slimmed the look back and it is not as boring/aweful asethtically as it used to be.

Isn't that the one? Or at least that's what they try to sell them as in Europe. Too tall to be a wagon. So S/CUV?

Base model ones look terrible but the top level ones look good. They're still journeys though, can't change that.

Look up "crossover" in the dictionary and this is what you'll see!
Too low and street-oriented to be an SUV, to tall to be a wagon, doesn't have the cosmetic structure of a (mini)van.

Is the outback a wagon or a crossover?

Wagon, as are the XC70 and allroad.
The reasoning is that they are the same as their non-offroader wagon counterparts but with lifted suspension. Cars like the Journey have a taller shell, so to speak, so they are crossovers instead.

That's why I threw in "slightly". Though looking at that picture, it looks less lifted than I usually think of them. Ah, screw it, I stand by my definition.

I've ridden in a Journey once. It was a university owned vehicle my professor borrowed for my class to go to a presentation in. I have to say, in it's defense, I thought it wasn't bad. Granted, I didn't get to drive it, but overall I thought it to be alright. I sat in the middle section and the seats were rather comfortable, so I'm thinking it was a higher level trim.
Does it share any heritage with the Chrysler Pacifica? My father owned one of those briefly, and well, it was a Chrysler Pacifica.
