I've driven an STI with the optional STI titanium shift knob. Looked cool, but was hot, as in it burnt my damn hand every time I went to shift it after it sat in the hot summer sun.

It's also too slippery of a surface in the winter if you're wearing gloves.

I think plastic is the best bet bet for shifter nobs. it may not look as nice as leather or metal but it doesn't get too hot in the sun, and if textured right they have way better grip.

I like to think that I know a bit about cars, but how the hell do you actually shift this?

From the CLK GTR

Edit: Answered my own question, Thanks motor250gto

The CLK GTR had a 6-speed sequential box that was controlled by paddles on the back of the steering wheel. It also has a clutch pedal, which was used for getting under way and downshifts. The knob was used to select neutral and reverse. You can see on the steering wheel where it says up and down to indicate what the paddles on the other side do. http://www.carpictures.com/vehicle/09INB2…
