Just found this on Craftsman's website. Since I'll be a proud (read: poor) homeowner in a month's time, I decided to look at mowers and other things I'll need to purchase. It's got the new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! engine from Briggs and ALL WHEEL DRIVE baby! It'll literally do donuts around all the other mowers out there

This will be great when I have to mow in the rain.

Since it snows here 1000 days/year, this will be great for mowing my driveway and sidewalks

I think I'm just going to get a little push mower for the first year. One of the ones that just has blades that spin really fast and leaves a terrible mess to clean up

You mean a completely unpowered one? They used to be nicknamed widowmakers, for the number of heart-attacks they caused among middle-aged men trying to push them through long grass...

They have fancy push ones, one of them has blades that don't touch and therefore is easier to push. I would buy one, but I am cheap and already have a handi down :)

Seriously though, I hate FWD mowers...you lose the power assist when lifting the front to go into high brush. My current mower is RWD.

Er... is it some kind of distributed AWD, or is it actually just driving all four wheels? Ordinary fwd lawn mowers are nightmarish to steer (at least with wheels on the ground), so I can't imagine what all four would be like. I prefer RWD "Big Wheel" brush mowers with freewheel hubs like the DR Field & Brush pictured below (I've used one extensively).

There is only one lawn mower worth considering. Flymo.

I would mow the shit out of that. #slammedlife

My wife and I bought our first home about 12 years ago. I realized that all of those things that were "just there" when I was a kid actually had to be purchased. Rakes, shovels, lawn mower, edger, garden tools, hedge clippers. As a kid, I never worried about where those things came from. They were just there .
I would suggest you look at high wheel mowers. They are easier to turn.

Yes, I mean one of those. However, I am 25 so my risk of heart attack *should* be significantly less. I am married, though, which immediately makes me old, right?

Rocking a RWD mower right now. Might have to step up to this AWD unit, because grass and all.

the 80 year old woman across the street from me who has the most meticulous yard in the neighborhood uses an electric one, completely quiet.

Try this new site called craigslist, that $500 goes a long way towards all the things you have no idea you will need/want :P

oh absolutely. Now that I'm done with apartment living, it sucks remembering that I'll have to buy all that stuff and put in the time to get things done

My special lady friend rocks a RWD Honda. She's kept it stock so far...'cept for the twist of wire deadman switch over-ride mod...

They actually work better than powered mowers. Has to do with how the push mower's blades come together like scissors for a clean cut, and a powered mower has a single blade that just hacks at it.
Of course, I've got a tiny yard. I wouldn't want to do an acre with it...

lol
Scratch that, it's your new house, go buy a sweet mower. You'll have it a long time and it's better than getting pissed off every time you go to start someone else's junk. Enjoy it.

Well I'm an engineer working at a small-engine builder with way too much knowledge of Briggs/Harley/Kohler/Tecumseh engines, so I'll probably just pick up some cheap craigslist stuff and rebuild as needed

Most lawn tractors are rwd...I think. At least ours was. I once did a 200 ft wheelie because of that fact.

Ha..Mill the head and run a pop up piston, aftermarket cam, run it on alcohol. You'll have to wear a gas mask to mow but it'll sound sweet.
