And possibly head gasket issue? Well he tried to start his car today. This is what happened. I remember telling him "don't start your car it made some strange noises the last time you tried" but he clearly didn't listen. Anyone know why this happened? He says he heard a pop.

What was the car, what were the symptoms? It looks like either it had a fuel leak or a doozy of an electrical fire.

I say it is an electrical fire. He was having electrical issues for the last month or so(battery light comes on, then all the other ones start coming on). The car was a 2001 Le Saber.

Did his battery look like it exploded? It normally takes someone ghetto rigging something pretty bad to set fire to a modern car like that... but a lot of cars are catching fire now with all the ethanol in the fuel. It eats the seals and gaskets and causes fuel leaks.

M-m-m-m, toasty.

I didn't really look at his battery I just couldn't get over the smell of burnt plastic it smelt caustic. I will go check it out tomorrow, that is if I can find it.

Dannnnnng! Glad nobody got hurt. I don't see a battery in there so I'm with others who suspect a battery explosion from shorting out or something.

IIRC those LeSabres have the battery installed under the rear seat cushion. Not ruling out electrical issues; just saying. The jump terminals are generally strapped to the tower brace (ground) so if something wore thin there it would definitely create an arc

I'm no mechanic, but that seems to be the problem right there.

That would make sense. It's still disturbing that it would catch fire before blowing a fuse or the battery. Either way, I bet he got out of the car in a hurry.

I think he may have to replace everything. . .

Do you like these? I have never been a big fan.

The jump terminals, I believe, bypass everything save starter and ground. They were installed because GM's PCMs of the time would figuratively take a shit at the slightest voltage irregularity. I don't know if there is a fuse or circuit break between the respective poles.
I also know the W-body wiring harnesses were generally regarded as feces

It seems as though it may have gotten a little too hot under there.

Battery is situated under the rear seat

The death of any car due to neglect is a tradgedy.

True story. I asked him when he changed his oil, spark plugs, filters, basic maintenance stuff. He didn't know. I was kind of annoyed when he said that.

Oh that's good. Sign me up to strap myself to that and send myself down the freeway.

I have one. As long as the engine hasn't been beaten into molasses by neglect it's an unexpectedly peppy and fun car. Been waiting to take mine autocrossing.

Lololololol yes he is. Doesn't help that he thinks everyone is an idiot, and so when you give him advice he just doesn't listen. . .
