I am not one of those people who tries to live their life through the lens of a smartphone camera as so many others tend to do. Admittedly, I do take pictures of my carpentry projects for Instagram to share with that community, but I don't take selfies or pictures of my food. For the most part, I don't often take pictures of other people's cars either unless for a humorous reason.

Exhibit A:

Kinja'd!!!

Exhibit B:

Kinja'd!!!

I see Lamborghinis pretty often and Ferrari of Atlanta is actually on the other end of town, but off the same road as my neighborhood, so they are nothing rare enough to have their picture taken by me either. When I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , people would take pictures of me on the road or stop to ask permission to do so in parking lots pretty regularly. None of this bothered me because it comes with the territory of driving something uncommon in the age of social media since everyone always has a camera in their pocket. But I have noticed a problem with all of this availability of content sharing twice recently...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I'm not really a truck guy, but I walked by a second generation Dodge Ram in a parking lot a few weeks ago which caught my eye. It had about a four-inch lift on it and the full-width solid axle across the front but there was no driveshaft connected to it (common issue with enough lift). Yet, what really grabbed my attention was the lack of a transfer case, so I leaned over a little out of curiosity and noticed it was owned by someone halfway through a four wheel drive conversion. When I stood back up, a woman in her forties was standing there, giving me the stink eye. Our conversation was as follows:

"Oh, is this yours?" to which she snorted:

"No! And it isn't yours either. I saw the guy who drove up in it go into the store a few minutes ago and I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate you taking pictures of his truck."

"Ma'am, I'm not taking pictures. I even left my phone in my car."

"Then what are you doing? Looking to steal something? Just leave before I get security over here."

I don't know what her problem was exactly because I wasn't taking pictures, nor did I even touch the truck (people who touch my cars without asking is a pet peeve, so I have the same respect for other people) or crawl under it, I just leaned over to look at the running gear. After this I wished her well and went about my business since one cannot really argue with crazy.

About two weeks later, in a different parking lot, a guy pulled in with a flat black Hummer H2. Every visible exterior piece of his vehicle was flat black. I couldn't tell if it was a vinyl wrap, Plasti-Dip, or paint, so I just slowed down while walking past it to see if I could tell from my five foot distance. The owner of the Hummer had turned around and started walking fast towards me:

"Hey man, don't be taking pictures of my truck. I get paid hundreds on the hour to rent that thing out to record producers for hip-hop videos. You want the pics, you gotta pay."

"The only picture I can take is a mental image. I don't even have a phone on me."

"Alright, just make sure you don't."

Is this just something that is happening to me lately or is it some sort of epidemic where you are not allowed to look at someone's car they have driven in public? I can sort of understand if I were touching a car, taking excessive pictures, or had pulled up next to them with a cargo van and wrench in my hand, but that isn't me. I'm nearly thirty years old, dress pretty conservatively and have never been arrested. Heck, I don't even have anything on my driving record and haven't in many years.

So, tell me, have people ever acted this way towards you for just looking at their car or someone else's?

Has the digital age really made people that paranoid or greedy that they have to lash out in indifference in a public place?

It seems like having to deal with the less confident teenage guys who would get in your face if you so much as talked to their girlfriend all over again.

Grace and Peace,

-Drew

I take lots of pictures, but generally not of cars in parking lots. I would probably try to ask permission first. However, the law is on your side. Generally, unless there are specific prohibitions in place, if you can see it, you can photograph it. But it helps to be courteous and ask if possible.

As for your two stories, I have no problem with the woman confronting you. If somebody were casing my car, I would be grateful that somebody spoke up about it. The second guy, though, sounds like a complete jerk. "I get paid hundreds on the hour to rent that thing out to record producers for hip-hop videos." Well, aren't you special. "(starts out sincere) Oh, my apologies ma'am. When I started taking a look at the truck, you must have been misunderstood that what I was doing was NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS!!!"

Starting off softly and apologetic draws them in, making the over the top shouting at the end much more dramatic.

"Hey man, don't be taking pictures of my truck. I get paid hundreds on the hour to rent that thing out to record producers for hip-hop videos. You want the pics, you gotta pay."

"Don't worry sir, It's just video." (continues filming)

I love running into egos like this.

I suspect it's not a "thing" increasing in frequency so much as it's always been a "thing" - an outreach program of Assholism. Some people will always be weird about their cars, or weird about cars in general. Asshole Woman Who Cries Wolf About Theft probably does not even grasp the concept of someone with mechanical interest, but if it weren't that she has deep ingrained Asshole Tendencies, she wouldn't have convinced herself you were up to no good.

Maybe, in fact, her sense of "that looks expensive" + envy produced the reaction. Projection: not just for DLP systems anymore.

Asshole Guy: H2?! Pfffff. Hahahahaha. Methinks he has some very confused ideas about the worth of his car's image and in what context. A flat black H1 I could see being of value to a music video, H2 not so much - and neither in a random parking lot.

If you go to car shows, even in the venue of a car show (which is about showing off one's ride) you still run into the occasional "no pictures please" weirdo. It happens, and has been happening for some time. Apparently cars' souls can be captured on film.

I've never had anyone get mad at me. But one time, I was taking a picture of a beautiful pearlescent blue '99 Mercedes CL600 in a Starbucks parking lot, when the owner walked up. She was a middle-aged woman with a thick Russian accent, and she just said, "Can I help you?" I responded by telling her how I admired her car, and she stood there, eyes wide, like she thought I was going to pull a knife or something (do I really look that threatening?). So I just said goodbye and quickly left.

That is the most ridiculous behavior I've heard of. That is seriously like painting your hair blue and expecting nobody to ask you about it or look at it. The whole point of a unique car is to stand out. If I was working on a vehicle, say like the Ram you saw with no transfer case, I would love for someone to ask me about it and be interested or intrigued. I bet you the lady that gave you hassle was the lady from the Diesel Ram and the whacky lady from the Prius. Some people don't know how to mind their own business and others, well let's say hope has been lost for many.

I don't have anything unique like an MGB, but I've had people ask me for a picture of my car or ask me questions about it which in my mind, is part of being a car person. I haven't had someone touch my car yet, but it has gotten close. When I admire a car usually I simply put my hands behind my back to state obvious intentions and smile and nod. I haven't had anyone tell me to stop snoopin, but then again I've lived in two places where people aren't that assholish

These two people were surely douchebags. No argument there.

But I'm always apprehensive of people who come look at my car. Especially because it doesn't have a locking hood latch and you can open the hood just by walking up to it and squeezing the lever.

I'd be flattered if you were complementary and took pictures but I'd bristle if you were crawling around it without asking.

For the truck, I had walked up to the passenger side and leaned over just a bit to see under it. The lift was enough so that most the undercarriage of it could be seen from where I was standing. I stopped and looked at it for about two minutes. This was a busy supermarket parking lot on a Saturday afternoon, by the way. There were people everywhere.

The chick was just a busybody. They're always looking to stir stuff up for no reason and they're far too common. The most recent busybody encounter I had was this weekend when I was at the grocery store. I was headed in and passed someone who was pushing their cart to the little cart return thing that was about 6 feet away. They asked if I was going to need a cart and I replied, 'no thanks I'm just grabbing something small.' We both move on, no big deal. Suddenly, from two rows away some little ~40 year old woman power walks over and is all like 'Hey, HEY!'. She then just goes off about how 'people in this town help each other, you're an asshole and even if you didn't want the cart the polite thing to do would be to take it and return it for them. etc. etc.'. Then the lady who had since finished returning the cart was walking past and goes 'What's your problem? He wasn't rude or anything'. Then they started arguing amongst themselves about whether I should have returned the cart. I just took sighed and went into the store.

So yeah, the chick who accosted you just wanted to stir shit like those folks always do. If you really looked like you were casing the car and were going to steal it she would probably have been too frightened to actually do anything. This was just her chance to correct a 'wrong' in her bizzaro internal world.

People are crazy and paranoid. I would be honoured if someone started snapping photos of my car. As you've stated, as long as they're not touching it, I'd take it as a compliment.

Only one time have I been scolded for snapping photos of a car and I think this is probably one of the only exceptions.

In Cuba, the done-up classic cars parked near busy public tourist areas are often owned by people who allow you to pay a few bucks and take photos in and around the car. If you're not used to such a thing and snap a photo of said car (there isn't any obvious fencing or signs up), you'll quickly have someone (often the owner) running up to you to demand money. Typically, they'll charge a buck for a few photos of the car itself. More if you want to be in the car or in the shot. For some, I understand, this is their day job.

Outside of those extreme cases though, I took a taxi ride in a late 50's Chevy Bel-Air convertible and struck up some conversation about the owner's car during the ride. I politely asked if I could snap some photos of his car and the engine once we arrived at the resort. He said absolutely and I went nuts with my camera for a few minutes.

There will always be people paranoid that you may be "casing" their car to be potentially stolen. I wouldn't take it personally though.

Although I can kind of sympathise with the truck woman, both of these people sound awful. I've never personally had any issue with checking out cars, but I live in a smallish town where people generally aren't assholes. That and there aren't too many cars to check out.

I have had less luck with actually trying to talk to talk to owners about their cars. I saw an S7 (one of my favourites) in a parking lot, and as luck would have it, the owner was walking back to his car. I asked if it was his and how he liked it, but he just kind of snubbed me. It was sad. If you drive a performance car, or at least a sportier trim, then at least be cordial to the people that ask.

H2 guy is a clueless jackass who doesn't know how marketing and/ or promotion work, and if he doesn't want peopel taking pictures of it, he shouldn't be driving it. Truck lady should just choke on her next doughnut hole and do the world a favor.

If someone shows interest in my car, I generally smile and nod, say hi maybe. If they want to talk about it I'll humor them. If someone ever wanted to take pictures of my car (it's an 84 Volvo 240 turbo wagon... so, not likely) I'd let them snap away.

Also, somebody stole the headlight off my bike chilling in the rack. Yeah yeah it was the kind where the little mount screws on to the handlebars and you can un-clip the light from the mount, but come on this was in the underground garage of a locked apartment building.

That's a bunch of insanity. If the Hummer guy didn't want all that attention, why the hell would he wrap his car??

This reminds me of a few weeks ago when I drove my Baja Bug to work and parked it right out front of the store so I could keep an eye on it throughout the day. I noticed a guy eyeballing it and walk over to it, but nothing out of the ordinary. He walked all around the car inspecting it and he took a picture or two of the engine. I kept watching him to make sure nothing fishy was going on, then he has the nerve to OPEN MY DAMN DOOR and help himself inside to get a closer look. I immediately walked out of the store and over to my car, told him to get the hell out and not touch my car or else I would call the police.

I startled him and he hopped out of the Bug and apologized for getting in my car without permission. I was furious and told him to not go near my car again or we would have more serious problems. I'm not ever like this, but when someone screws with my cars, I get pissed.

Although the people in both of these cases sound like idiots — especially the Hummer dude — to be fair I don't think one should take offense at someone else taking offense at you inspecting their car. You know that you have the noblest of intentions, but they don't know that, and furthermore, they have no reason or incentive to give you the benefit of the doubt.

If I saw someone walking around my house looking at it, I don't think my first thought would be that he was just an architecture fan admiring my flawless recreation of a 1980s crack house. But even if he were, it would still be annoying.

Cars are kind of an oddity in normal human life because they're a pretty major possession — for most of us, it's the most expensive thing we'll ever own next to a house — and in some ways an emotional extension of our selves and/or dwellings, yet we cart them around with us in public and regularly have to leave them unattended at the mercy of any passing stranger. So, at least for anyone who has an emotional investment in their car, there's a natural anxiety inherent in leaving your car in a parking lot.

As car enthusiasts, we should respect that. If you see a car you admire and the owner is nearby, acknowledge their existence with at least a "hey, nice car" and ask their permission to check it out. Just that courteous gesture will generally defuse any anxiety and will probably result in the driver talking to you about the car and letting you check it out as much as you want. Or if the driver isn't around, be discreet and don't behave in a way that sends creepy vibes to passersby. However innocent you know your actions to be, bear in mind that people with bad motivations will behave the exact same way trying to conceal their intentions.

It's basically about showing courtesy and respect for others — for their possessions and for their feelings. It's not what you have to do, but what you do because of consideration for others. Etiquette is at heart an act of generosity.

I have a neighbor that I consider to be kind of an idiot, because he objects to me walking my dog past his house and letting her poop on his driveway. I have poop bags attached to the leash so I always have them and I always pick up her poop. The driveway is plain dirt so there is literally no adverse effect on his property from some poop being temporarily deposited on it. There is no rational reason why this guy should get bent out of shape.

Yet, he does, and so I don't walk my dog past his house, because its his property, and my confidence in my own ethical rectitude and logically superior position doesn't trump his right to feel the way he does about his property, even if I think those feelings are idiotic. It doesn't make sense, but humans don't make sense.

Well, thanks for the compliment.

Maybe one day I'll feel like stirring the pot of "public vs. private". Haha

Yep. I have a feeling he probably dumped money into it thinking he could use it for promotions and is now upside down on it.

The transplants tend to be most of the problem. The natives aren't all that bad - when you can find one.

Talking about my cars when I get asked has always been fun for me. Let's be real, I'd probably strike up a conversation about your Volvo. I want one for some reason.

That's how it should be on their end. Well, I wouldn't let a stranger drive my cars, but at least the cordial end of things.

No, it's actually depressing. The one that sent me into my funk was actually some high school kid who had a pretty nice old Celica who dropped a "better than your shitbox brah" line when I complimented him on keeping a pretty nice older car in good shape. Fuck him, I hope that thing eventually caught fire on I-71 near the Taft exit.

Good point, but I park in a shopping center parking lot that has had several cars stolen from it over the past year.....folks around here are a little touchy when they see strange people nosing around their vehicles.

For all you know, he was seconds away from pulling that screwdriver out of his pocket and doing the deed.

I would have been pretty livid too.

I was sitting at a light a couple of weeks ago, and a guy walked up to my front passenger door and pulled on the handle to open the door. Luckily for me, it was locked. He had a knife in his hand, and the eyes of a addict.

He pulled a couple more times, then turned and walked away, only to be tackled by a couple of citizens that took him down and started kicking the shit out of him.

It's a thankless job for sure, but you might consider it a teaching exercise. It's one curse of being a lawyer - I guess I'd rather risk get punched by a wannabe rapper than let him tell me I can't take a picture in public. It's easy to be an Internet tough guy, but man does that kind of ignorance really grind my gears!

Just saying but if you called the cops cause I was looking at and taking pictures of your car, they would just laugh at you, or at least where I live they would. It's not a crime to look or to take pictures, at least on public property it's not. You could call them if I was touching your car or getting a little too close to your car, but not looking at it or taking pictures of it. I use myself as an example, but I don't normally take pictures of cars unless it's at an Auto show anyway.

I can't believe someone would just open your car and get in. Motorcycles are bad for this, being open vehicles some people just hop on. I've always yelled at them and explained that they wouldn't just get in someone's car without asking, but apparently some people will.

Gawking just comes with the "unusual car" territory. However, I often come out to find people with their whole entire head poking into my Elise, or taking pics at the gas pump with my daughter sitting in it. Those ass clowns need a lesson in boundaries.

Yeah, that's a good step over. When I had a Jeep, the doors and top were off the entire summer. One time I walked out of a restaurant and some parents had sat their kid in the driver's seat. "He likes Jeeps." Yeah, so do I. Just because the doors are off doesn't mean it's fair game to put your kid in my car.
