(GIS photo) Just brought this beast home. It's in great shape, aside from what we believe to be an alignment issue. If anyone has experience with these vehicles, I would love an opinion: At higher speeds (above 45 basically) there's a noticeable vibration, and it resonates stronger around 50-55. It's not undriveable by any means, but it's obvious that something's not totally right. It was purchased from a family member, who had ti checked out and believes the issue to be stemming from the alignment- these cars are supposed to be aligned every 12k miles, and that was overlooked the past year or two.

Overall my lady and I are ecstatic, since it's our first car purchase. The mileage sucks compared to my Buick, but it's not as bad as a bigger/older truck. The leather, moonroof, and heated seats are luxuries we've never had, so it's definitely an upgrade!

Any help, relatign to anything with these Monteros, is appreciated!

Fun fact- The Montero is called the Pajero in other countries. In Spanish Pajero translates to "Wanker"

Check the front wheel bearings/hub assembly and any obvious signs of damaged wheels. Sometimes cheap out of round tires can also cause issues. Alignment, bushing replacement and new shocks should do the trick otherwise. Pretty solid trucks - way overbuilt. Mitsu engines have a reputation for oil burning but not sure if that is limited to the 4-bangers.

Cool ride, I like that generation of montero, I dig the styling and they are still quite capable all things considered.

Haha, I wonder who thought calling a car "The Wanker" was a good idea

Welcome to Monteroworld. I have the generation previous to yours, we got it for about 3k as a snow beater. Even with the shitty tires, it's a tank in the snow once you put in 4Hi. It's been great to us - leaking valve cover gaskets is our only issue. Great 4wd system, 7pax seating, very comfy. You'll learn to hate the rear door though.

thanks! i'm planning on going to my mechanic next week and having them poke around. I was going to ask that they do they alignment if they agree thats the issue, but the hubs are a good suggestion. the ABS light is on, and that happened when the hubs on my buick went bad. any idea of cost on these things?

I'm not saying this is your issue, but we had a awd Rav4 that had a terrible hum/vibration at mid-high speeds. Turned out it was the tires.

No idea on cost - but based on recent replacements on a 4WD Dakota I would say about $200 per side for quality parts. If you have a decent workspace this is a good DIY item - pretty much bolt-on.

Yeah, my dad replaced the hubs on the Buick, so I was thinking of having him do it, I'm just worried that 4wd makes things more difficult? I'm really not opposed to getting quality professional work done though, this vehicle's going to be crossing the country in a few months towing a 4k lb camper.

The tires were making noises previously, but after they were rotated and got some miles on them it seemed to even out. I'm assuming you mean the tires were worn unevenly?

come to think of it, I had a tire problem like yours recently. My tires were old (year wise) but not worm out and because of the full time 4wd on my truck the belt had started warping/cupping the outside of the tires. you could feel the up down sawtooth profile of the treads and it made for a loud highway experience. new tires, and no problems. get good rubber, its more money but it will be worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the tip. I'm definitely going to thoroughly explore the possibilities before making any type of change/repair.

This is my dream 4x4, and nothing else! I wish I could drive one...but I love sports cars too much.
