Kinja'd!!!

Like most other Opponauts, I browse eBay and Craigslist pretty frequently, even when I'm not in search of a vehicle to purchase. Occasionally, I will come across a posting for a higher-horsepower car, and in the description (usually all in caps), it says "It has a built T-56/T-5" etc. Now my question is, what exactly is a "built" transmission? Are the internals made of a stronger material than usual?

Stronger materials, different gearing.

Its all down to what the buiilder thought was best or what the customer wanted.

Typically, yes. The bigger question is which parts were upgraded when you had it 'built'?

Probably rebuilt internals with lighter/stronger parts.

Sometimes they're built with bananas and sawdust. Bitchin' for about 3o miles.

Ahh, okay. It does seem like there could be a lot of variation in what 'built' means then. And it's one of those things that's hard to know for sure without taking the trans out and opening it up.

Really gets rid of that gear growl though.....not saying I've ever done that.....

Also Rotella 40 weight really quiets a knock.

There must be easier ways to make a banana smoothie though!

Usually new gear assemblies and then syncros, keys, etc are made with stronger materials. That's the gist I got when looking to upgrade my T-56 :)

Straight cut gears, perhaps.
