Toyota wants to use hybrid technology in the World Rally Championship if it returns to the series, the Japanese brand is known to be seriously evaluating a return to the WRC and its European competition department TMG has already built a test car. Racecar Engineering understands that the Japanese marque wants to use its market leading hybrid technology in the WRC, to reflect its production cars, and that the car it is developing for rallying does not meet the current regulations but should be able to run in 2017 at the earliest.

It is thought that the test car is based on a Yaris chassis but the final WRC car will be based around a new model which has yet to be launched. It is not clear if the test car is a hybrid.
Whilst TMG is very advanced with the test car no decision has been taken on the future of Toyota's motorsport programmes. NASCAR, Super GT and Super Formula all seem certain to continue however.

Well, yaris?

Isn't the yaris has been in production for 1 million years?

Or is it the new one from south east asia?

Dead serious. A hybrid running the top level of the WRC? That's huge news! I wonder how they'll counter the weight of all those batteries

RCE said it could be the Yaris or it could be not. It could be the new Juke rival, Toyota is working on. Remember Mini entering the Countryman? Or it could be the smaller than 86, sports car/hatch that Toyota is also working on. What car they will use is less important now, what is important is that Toyota is going back to being motorspors powerhouse, and that's great.

I Doubt it's the yaris.

And yes, i miss the japanese automaker racing. But it would be better if they back, with a brand new Celica.
Or a heavily tuned GT86 tailored for rallying!

Who said they will use batteries ? They could use a super capacitor like they use in WEC, or smaller ones distributed all over the car or even a flywheel, rally cars don't need to be as stable as WEC cars, because they don't reach the huge WEC speeds, so this means a flywheel hybrid system could be even on likings of the meticulous Japanese engineers.

Stability is still important in rally, especially when lining up a jump at 130 mph. At this very moment a minute adjustment in balance/handling is costing driver Mads Ostberg the better part of a second per mile down in Mexico. But you're right, they don't necessarily need to use batteries.
