I was reminded of my dad's old cars, and it got me wondering who here has some interesting cars in their family's past.
Best I've got is probably what my dad has owned. His first car was a '65 Beetle
Which was followed by a '76 FJ40 LandCruiser that he bought new.
Later on, he had a Plymouth Valiant convertible, with Commando V8 and 4 speed, he did some suspension and engine work on it, I'm not sure what, but I'm assured it was very fast. I can't find any pictures that match what his was like.
He also had a Datsun 210, I don't care how crappy it was, I still want one
And then there was the Fairlane wagon.....oh how I wish he still had that thing. He got it from his Mom after my parents were married and it was run until I was born and the old Ford finally died.
After that they stuck with Ford wagons, but an LTD and Tauri aren't as cool....
EDIT: I forgot he had an MGB as well. Before the Datsun. His best friend drove it, first time he ever let someone else drive the car, and he totalled it :(
Anyways. What've you guys got?

My grandfather owned a couple of Renault 10s.
I imagine rear engined French cars score high on the Jalopmeter.

I would hope so, considering how high front engined french cars rank

He also had a Datsun 210, which my dad and aunt learned to drive in.

NOTHING.
Mom has ONLY ever had Camaros or Silverados. Dad has some cool cars like a Buick GS, Fiero and now a A8L ('04). My siblings currently drive a S10 and a HHR. Some cool cars in there but certainly not jalop.
It's hard to like cars around these people.
/rant.

I don't know if they're jalopy, I just like crappy Datsuns :p But that's cool, my grandpa has had his fair share of cool cars, including a Westfalia VW bus, and I believe a 72 Mercedes....don't know which model
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:23 |

That is a varied and wonderful list

My godfather had a '98 Volvo V70 wagon, that was diesel, and manual, but FWD. no SR20, since I only saw it once, and that was when I was like 5, but I remember it being the golden brown color

My dad:
Triumph TR4 (1963?)
Baja Bug (year?)
Dodge Dart Coupe (1969)
Plymouth Satellite Sebring (1971)
Ford Pinto (1972)
And yes, I left non-jalop cars off the list, and YES, I consider the Pinto to be jalop.

I know what you mean, even though my dad had cool cars, it's like it wore off or something.....he just has his Taurus wagon now that he's done some work on, but he doesn't like cars nearly as much as me. He's always interested in my Volvo though, he likes working on it because it makes sense, unlike the taurus haha
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:25 |

It's funny how nostalgia makes crappy cars cool. The Renaults weren't really considered nice then, either.
These were just normal cars that people back then drove.

My dad currently owns a viggen, previously an '89 900, manual focus wagon, t-bird, buick sky hawk turbo. My mom had a '87 toyota 2wd 1-ton pickup in tan, with a manual, along with a dart GTS, and currently has a rwd cts coupe. My grandma (mom's side) had a corsair monza convertible, super beetle, fiat spider, and gran torino. My grandpa (same side) had a chevy II wagon, a '74 corolla, and a hillman imp. My grandpa (dad's side) had a '78 pontiac firebird formula, a diesel nova, a lincoln mark 4, triumph tr3, '58 fury, and a brown '49 chevy panel van. I've had a saab 900, big block bronco, and a bmw 2002.

Ha, i hear that. Growing up it was Camry Camry Camry Camry. No seriously. Four Camrys. Luckily i'm old enough to predate the Camry. What did my parents drive before that? Corolla. Its only now that i'm all grown up and out of the house that they have decided to buy non-camrys.
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:27 |

Same with the Beetle. He just bought it because it was $200 or something, and he needed a cheap first car. Never woulda guessed they'd have such a huge following now

![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:30 |

By far the most Jalop car to ever be owned by someone in my family was my old Celica
But my dad also had a BMW 320i when i was a little kid. Nothing else anyone has owned is even remotely jalop. There have been four Camrys and a Carolla.

Holy damn that sounds terrible. My parents got rid of their fun when they had kids & its only been full-size 'murican trucks & SUVS since. My dad even wanted to get a used 'slade until I got him to test drive a A8. Anyways, at least when I was 16 before I got my first car I could go do donuts in my mom's truck.
How did you ever get through your youth?!
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:32 |

My grandpa straight pipe'd and chop topped his, along with a single fat black racing stripe (car was white) and maglite wheels. My family has owned more than their REALLY bland cars, but I've listed the noteworthy ones.

I understand the whole "wore off" thing completely. Both my parents used to have fun cars, and I even remember my dad working on his old Yukon when I was younger, but none of that anymore.
At least your dad is interested in your Volvo though. I obviously talked to my dad about the last 2 cars I bought before hand and all he said was some thing like "not practical and bad for snow". All I can think is - 'dammit dad, you used to DD a Fiero in Wisconsin!'.

I am so unbelievably jelly. He'll never sell though. He's wanted a flat fender jeep since he was like 5.

The story goes he rolled the TR4 back when he was in the Air Force in '65-'66, shenanigans may have been involved. He doesn't talk about it but lessons learned all around: NO SHENANIGANS WHILE DRIVING. All the others have sold long ago, but I sure wish he had held onto the Satellite long enough for me to drive it. He sold it and replaced it with a sensible 1981 4-door Buick Skylark Limited. Every car since that list has been very non-jalop. He converted from a string of GMs to Toyotas in the late '90s and has been all Toyota since then. Currently rocks a RAV.

Yeah there's that, but it took some convincing with each of my cars, I was always so frustrated for the same reason: "Oh come on, you had a 15 yeah old British roadster in a place nicknamed Raincouver for gods sake, but I shouldn't buy a German car because parts are more expensive?"
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:47 |

my uncle also had an FJ40 (shit now i'm gonna have to get into his vehicles. There's literally nothing that he's owned that's not cool) but anyway, yeah he drove the thing until the wheels fell off. Like, literally. He was driving down the road and saw one of his wheels roll by him.
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:52 |

My dad had a '69 Mustang Shelby when he was a young 'un.
Traded it in for a Plymouth Volare wagon.
So, he had a cool car and a wagon, but not both at the same time. In '74, he got a new Hilux which he still owns .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
That's as Jalop as he got. No brown cars or diesels, either.
After that, as far as I know, it was an '83 Grand Prix, an '85 Cutlass Supreme, an '88 Cutlass Supreme, a '91 Eighty Eight, a '95 Eighty Eight, an '89 Tercel, a '92 Camry, a '96 Camry, and now an '07 Tacoma. He had a '51 Chevy truck for a few years, but never, ever got it on the road. It just taunted me from the carport, so I'm not counting it.
Mom had a couple of big ol' '70s Fords (LTDs?) named Gerald and Betty, then a 70's Corolla, 80's Pontiac Acadian, '86 Hyundai Pony, '81 Olds Omega, then Dad's hand-me-downs of Tercel, Camry, Camry, and now a '10 Yaris. Pretty meh.
Grandparents always had sensible cars like an '85 Accord, '84 Chevette, '72 Valiant, a '60s Austin sedan... the '58 Plymouth might score cool points.

TIL my dad is way more Jalop than me.

Ok, uncle's cars: '70 charger that he swapped a 440 and 4 speed into, it was a legendary sleeper in the area and was featured in a few magazines, fj40, lifted nissan hardbody with a light bar, yj on big fuckoff tires, '01 power wagon dually with a cummins, and now he has an '05 power wagon as a tow rig/road trip vehicle. along with, of course, his Willys.
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:54 |
|
That's awkward. My dad has good stories about that rig...he was driving in the snow once, and pulled out to pass someone because 4x4, and quickly found himself sliding perpendicular to the car he was passing, staring directly down in the drivers window, because SWB. Says he kept on the gas, full lock to the left and feathered the clutch and throttle to use the front wheels to pull him back around. Another time was crawling up a super steep hill, the truck was full of people, and the front wheels started to lift. He got two of the guys to get out and stand on the front bumper haha, and then they were fine
![]() 03/07/2014 at 01:56 |

Probably more Jalop now than it was then, my Dad's first car was a '64 Ford Consul Cortina Mk I, similar in colour and mods to below:
Following that he had several older Holden Kingswoods, with various modifications on them from Celica 5-speed gearboxes, to 308s and 350s with exhausts you could hear from a suburb away, similar to below:
A Holden HQ Statesman DeVille on wide mags and a twin straight through exhaust, similar to below but midnight blue:
A '78 Ford XC Fairmont GXL with 351 V8, similar to below but gunmetal grey. The one car he truly regrets selling. He later bought a 6 cylinder version but paled in comparison):
An olive green '76 Nissan 260C Coupe, similar to below. By this time he was going through his divorce so he had to drop the V8s for financial reasons, but he always managed to find something interesting:
An ochre '78 Nissan C210 Skyline coupe:
Several early 80s Holden VB-VH Commodores, mostly 4.2L V8s and mostly red, plus a blue 6-cylinder which was the first car I learnt to drive in:
A jap-import '88 Nissan R31 Skyline Passage GT, Fj20 manual, similar to below without the wheels:
A '00 Holden VT SS Commodore (LS1 & 6-speed) similar to below, same colour but different wheels:
And currently, a '02 Holden VX SS Ute with LS1 & 6-speed manual:
There were many less memorable vehicles he owned/drove, such as a Proton Savvy, Toyoya MX62 Cressida, Nissan 280C, Nissan Bluebird Series 3 wagon, plus a few others.

My uncle had a beautiful black '66 Impala. It got rear-ended though and instead of fixing the damage, he very professionally cut most of the rear end off, sealed it with a large cross-sectioned piece of chromed diamond-plate, put some truck tail lights on it and stuck on a trailer hitch so he could tow his dune buggy.

No pictures...because the government doesn't like photobucket/uploading things. Damn work.
Anyway, dad's Charger falls under the Jalop category, 68 Charger R/T (Hemi/Torqueflight) that he's had since 72, it spent most of the 70s at drag strips. He's had 2 68 Super Bees, the one he has now was bought about 3 years ago because he had an identical one in the 70s.
And then the most jalop may be his 56 Dodge pickup. Before the Lil Red Express trucks came out in 78, he was already planning a 440 swap, torqueflight, and stacks. Unfortunately, the 440 didn't happen and it got a 318. Truck actually served as an occasional DD all the way until the mid 90's when it got traded for a LeBaron. :puke:

I don't have pictures, unfortunately, but my dad for an extremely short time drove a Dodge Dart. His uncle willed it to him and after his death, my dad took ownership but couldn't afford the gas so he got rid of it :( He still regrets letting that car go. He was young and ignorant, I suppose.
My mom used to have a GTI with a plaid interior that she absolutely loved. Her parents gave it to her after finishing college but some jackass ran a stop sign and totaled it just two years into her owning the car. She says that was the most fun car she has ever owned.
My grandpa has a 91 Jaguar XJS that he bought the year my sister and I were born. British Racing Green and he only takes it out on the most special occasions. He adores that car.

Now that I think about it my family is pretty Jalop.
Dad had a MG B and Porsche 914 (before I was born)
Then they both had a string of Saab 99 and 900s and finally a '89 9000 turbo.
Mom traded her last 900 for a '89 Peugeot 505 sw8 wagon. (RWD and handled embarrassingly better than the 9000 turbo)
They currently have a first gen Audi TT (awd, conv) and an early 2000s Passat awd v6 wagon.
I currently drive a NC Miata (when it's not snowing) and a Contour SVT (when it's not broken). I've been walking a lot this winter.

i'd say the Fiero is pretty jalop.
Also I know what you mean my parents had some cool foreign cars when they were younger, Datsun's Volvos, VWs, but when I was a kid (i'm 23 so i still am a kid lol) my parents have had boring Fords, Mercurys, Dodges, and a Buick. FWD Family sedans, Vans, and 1/2 ton pick ups. Now my mom just bought a Hyundai Sonata 2.0t which is almost cool, better than the Prius she had before it, and waaay better than the 4 cylinder Ford Escape she had before that. My aslo Dad just bought a Dodge Ram 1500 instead of a Tacoma with a manual, which is what he should have bought. He had a 97 Taco and loved it, but like most ppl he is convinced that he needs a 1/2 ton.
I honestly think the domestic cars my parents had when I was a kid are the reason it's so hard for me to love American cars. In the back of my mind I'll always think that are "for my parents". For 30-40 year olds with four kids and a mortgage. Where as Japanese and European cars still seem cooler just because they are different. That's why I have never owned an American car. I'm not saying that will never change though.
Although my Mom had an green 03 Focus Wagon with a manual transmission . Which was pretty cool, and I guess kinda of counts.

It was an E21 and it was brown, which now that I think about it is extra jalop points. 4 speed manual. I just remember hating sitting in the back seat of that thing.
The Celica was my first car and attempt at rebellion from the world of Camrys. It was an alltrac so it was 4wd and had a turbocharger, good for 190hp.

Dad's cars: (60's - 70s Don't remember most of the years they were built.)
Harry Potter Anglia (worst car ever made).
Simca 1204 - early 70's model. First car I drove and / or smoked a cigar in....Dad left the cigars on the dashboard on my first solo drive. I also autocrossed it.
Volkswagen microbus.
Fiat 124D station wagon. (Not a diesel. May not have been a 124, but it was a wagon in same era as the 850/124 Spyders, both of which were in the store when he bought it.) Bought new sometime in the late 60s. Beautiful red leather seats. Car lasted about a year, but maybe the best car he ever owned in a Jalop sort of way.
AMC Pacer Wagon (My fault. It was pristine when he bought it used so I suggested he buy it. Not a bad car actually.)
Pre-Offyatindy, dad was a Studebaker man !

We once had a Mercedes Benz C 230 Kompressor. That supercharger is amazing, but apparently it's timing got affected real badly that we sometimes get unintended supercharger acceleration. Dad played around with the accelerator and damaged the surpercharger that way, so it was deemed unsafe and we sold it.
