Haha I was already in my car when I took the picture, I noticed it was a manual when she drove in and pulled the e- brake instead of passing the reverse gear to go into "park"

In the US, E39 540i wagons were only offered with an automatic. You could get a manual 5 Series wagon, but it was a 528.

They made a 540i sedan with a manual, but all of the E39 540i wagons were automatic.

Yeah it was my understanding that there weren't any 540i Wagons with the 6-speed. There weren't to many manual 540i sedans either (although I am the proud owner of one!)

I obviously defer to you, but funnily enough I have been in a manual 540i wagon here in SF. Pretty sure it wasn't an import, and the current owner (a 3rd or 4th order friend) didn't mention that it was a swap. Must've been done by a PO.
