The whole world was a racetrack to me as a kid. Whatever toy car I happened to be holding was going to drive on everything. I'd find chicanes and hairpins around household objects and then slide my Matchbox cars around them, drifting so close to the edge of the countertop or sofa that one rear wheel would hang precariously off the edge. Then my imagined driver would gather it all up, recover and speed off towards the next set of curves.
Recapturing a bit of that childhood joy is what having an RC car is all about. Now, when i go to the park and see a mossy path, i think "rally stage." A smallish patch of concrete becomes a "decommissioned airport, turned race track." It's all there in my imagination. And now i'm sharing it with you guys. Hope you enjoy.
A little info for those who want it/care. The car is a Tamiya TT01. At various stages in the video it's wearing one of three different bodies, one of four sets of wheels and one of two sets of tires, one set of which is actually just a piece of ABS piping cut into four little tire sized pieces.
The camera is an iPhone 5S and the whole thing is shot in 120 fps. Some of you may complain that i've gone too Zack Snyder on the thing, but i feel like it's a lot easier to appreciate just how much RC cars echo their 1:1 counterparts in slow motion. At full speed, it's hard to appreciate suspension movement and the like.

Impressive cinematography. Pretty cool to see how the car mimics real life at these speeds. Not sure about the music, that drumline is spastic, but it's an awesome video otherwise.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! Aphex Twin is definitely spastic. This is actually one of their less 'challenging' songs.

The only Aphex Twin/AFX song I've really listened to is .215061 (had to google the name). I might see if there's any of his other stuff that makes more sense to me, but I honestly cannot find a rhythm in most of it. Do I need to take drugs first?

It's entirely possible drugs need to be involved.
I had a couple of good friends in middle shcool and high school that were really into Aphex Twin and so i'd hear it a lot at their houses. Most of it is too out there for me, but some of it I really like. It's that whole "order from chaos" thing, just when you get frustrated with the randomness it all, it suddenly starts to makes sense.

So what you're saying is I either need to get some squares, or I need to binge on it for 12 hours until it makes sense?
Right. Let's do it.

Why not do both? Time to start the weekend a day early! Or time to show up to work tomorrow on acid.
Erm.....
These are not the droids you're looking for.
I'm out!

Ha, as soon as I read "120fps" in the headline I knew it was a 5S.
Sweet video, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
*Shame my iPhone 5 can't natively run 120fps...

yeah....i've been filming everything in slow motion since i got it. Thanks for the compliment!

If I wasn't about to sign an apt lease and finish college loans I'd be so buying one of those right now. But my car and those other things need my money =(. I did not know this was a thing though and I want one really bad right now...so thanks a lot.

Oh it's definitely a thing. I think it's probably bigger in other countries than it is here though.

Oh yea! I remember Jalop posting either one of these videos or something similar a long time ago. I completely forgot and didn't really think much of it at the time. Your video had more of the "i could see myself doing this for hours feel"
Thanks for sharing!

Heh, i used to work in a hotel. I'd get off work at 11PM, get home and then grab my RC car and go drift in this underground parking garage kinda close to my house for like an hour or two with the initial D soundtrack blasting in my headphones.
Technically speaking, it was illegal 1AM underground drifting.... just...on a smaller scale.

Hahaha fantastic.
Ok I got to ask. What do you think you spent on a full set up car (I mean 1 chassis, 1 body, etc) because I know you mentioned you had a few different ones. If you don't want to answer I understand

Hmmm....probably around $300, maybe a little less. This is basically the car I have in my video.
So that's 200 bucks plus shipping. If a kit is "RTR" (like the one i linked) it means it's "ready to run" and will have all electronics and a radio included.
In addition to the RC car, you'll need a battery, a charger and if you want to drift, some drift tires. The battery is kind of up to you, if you're willing to wait a while and get stuff shipped from china and the solder stuff yourself, it can be ridiculously cheap, I think i picked up the one i'm using now for like $5. But it also took almost 3 months to arrive from hong kong..... A normal cheapish starter battery will run you 20-30 bucks. A charger should be about $25 for a cheap one, which is all i've ever used or wanted. Tires will cost about 20 dollars for a set from tower hobbies, or like 5 dollars a set on ebay shipped from china. Even cheaper is to just get 2" abs piping and cut it into tire sized sections, though that leaves you with very little grip, which works on some surfaces and not on others.
So yeah, $250-$300 depending on how much you want to hunt around for stuff.
Of course i've spent way more than that, but it was mostly on stupid visual accessories like lights, additional bodies (I love the process of building them for some reason, it's like building a model...that you get to drift afterwards.) Or crap that ended up doing nothing (aluminum driveshaft, "faster" motor)
Anyway, its fun if you dont mind looking like a nerd. I definitely kicked the idea around for a year or two before committing. But i'm glad i did in the end as i've gotten pretty consistent use out of it for the past 4 years or so.

Great timing, I just recently found my favorite childhood r/c car and bought a transmitter for it on ebay. It's a gamble whether it'll work or not though, since it's toy grade, 49 mhz and it's hard soldered.
Now I can't wait after watching that! I love the Skyline shell. And the 350z reminds me of good times with one of my own. It survived a surprising amount of abuse, lol.

Very awesome video, and a very awesome playground you've got to use too
