Just look at the increase in contact area between the stock tires (Michelin primacy 215w) and the new tire (Yokohama AD08 225w)
No I've just got to find a shop that will not refuse to remove the TPMS sensors from my wheels.

sexy rubbers.

Good luck with that last bit. Maybe the'll have you sign a waiver?
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:36 |

they just unscrew off the inside of the valve stem
Find a smaller mom/pop shop. the chain stores have rules, mom/pop stores will bend/break them for your business.

Why won't they remove the sensors?
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:39 |

hopefully, all I know is that most of the big name tire shops just will not do it
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:41 |

You must tell how the AD08s stack up. I have a set of very light 15" wheels that will be getting SOEMTHING street/trackable put on them for the FieSTa... what thing will it be??? I had been thinking Proxes R1Rs or Direzza ZIIs...
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:42 |

Because it is illegal to remove them (something about removing a safety system), but that is only if they are installed on a car. There would be nothing illegal about removing sensors from wheels that do not come in to the shop attached to a car, but many shops draw the line at "we do not remove TPMS sensors".

Soon.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:47 |

Why do you want them removed?
I may be naive on this one, but what's the benefit?
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:47 |

Why not remove the sensors yourself
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:52 |
|
I chose these mostly because they were only 0.1" larger in diameter than the stock tires, while still having the largest tread width I could find in a 225 (8.5").
The Proxes were on my list, but they offered less tread width and a larger diameter than the Yokohamas even though they were a bit lighter. If I can get them mounted in time I may have a (soaking wet) track review in 2 weeks
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:54 |
|
because the TPMS sensors are currently mounted to wheels with tires, I would need to remove the tire anyway to access them.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:57 |

These will be primarily used for my track/autocross wheel set, so I don't really need sensors. Part of it is my extreme OCD nature and wanting to remove unnecessary weight, and the other reason is I plan to sell them and recoup some of the cost of the tires.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:57 |
|
Why remove the sensors? Will that 1lb kill you? If yes, then drive without socks, underwear, watch and your phone and boom, you've made up the weight!
![]() 03/05/2014 at 15:58 |
|
Yeah, I'm planning on taking it to a performance oriented shop that understands the concept of "track wheels"
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:00 |
|
Weight is one reason, the fact that I can sell them and recoup about half the cost of the tires is another.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:03 |
|
The removal iteslf isn't the problem, per se. It's the fact that you have to remove the tire, then unscrew them and replace them with regular valve stems, the rebead the tire. I hated anything and everything TPMS when I worked at a tire shop.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:03 |

thanks obama
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:07 |

Sounds fair to me.
I wonder if you could use 2 shops. Go to one and say you need the tires un-mounted, say you're selling the wheels.
unscrew the censors
go to another shop and have tires mounted
Win

nice color choice! Is it as rare around you as it is here? I've actually never seen another Ultramarine FR-S in my area.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:10 |
|
And are you unable to have TPMS with the yokohamas, or is it personal preference?
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:11 |
|
Or better yet
Go to a tire shop and ask them to unmount tires from wheels
Remove TPMS from wheels in parking lot
Walk back into same store with my new tires and ask to have them mounted.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:11 |

I've seen 3 FR-S's around town. 1 Whiteout, 1 Hot Lava, 1 Ultramarine. Almost sold mine when I saw the blue one just down the street from where I work :D
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:12 |

Personal preference, plus I can sell these unnecessary nannys to someone else for about $60-70 each.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:13 |

seems like a lot of walking in and out of the same shop, though it might work...
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:17 |
|
All the ones around me are white, black, or red (and one light blue BRZ)
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:19 |
|
Actually you don't have to replace the stems. My winter set has the tpms valve stems without the sensors (because they are $60 each).
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:24 |
|
Is it the band-style sensor? Those things were even worse.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:38 |
|
I hear you.
Got new wheels and rubber last year. Can't wait to put them back on
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:41 |

I read somewhere that Ultramarine was one of the least popular colours, and that it was also being discontinued for '14.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 16:41 |
|
Mine are this type.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 17:18 |
|
I know they already discontinued the equivalent BRZ color so I guess it would make sense if the FR-S would follow suit.
I know a lot of people were not too crazy about the color when it first came out, but I get tons of compliments now from other 86 owners. The general consensus is that the color really grows on you.

Gotta burn those pretty paint lines off the tires!
![]() 03/05/2014 at 18:04 |
|
pry them off or burn them off to access sensor
![]() 03/05/2014 at 18:17 |
|
I'll likely just go to the guy the local drifters use. Apparently he charges around $10 to mount and balance a tire and I'm sure he would have no problem removing sensors.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 18:20 |
|
Thank you for not running more then 225. I drove one with 255's all around and i wanted to drive it off a bridge.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 18:37 |
|
I was actually really hesitant to even go as wide as 225. I love how balanced it is with 215s right now but I kept getting furled black flags for drifting at my last track day.
I just hope these don't turn the car into an understeery sloppy (and noticeably slower accelerating ) mess like the guys running 245s and 255s.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 18:43 |
|
It's not only understeer but it's serious effect to braking as well, it's a bit a dangerous. I really question if they guys know if a car handles good or not, because the change was oblivious to me.
But if they want that look...go ahead.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 19:21 |
|
sell yourself on a street corner and boom, you've made up that $$$$
there... both of your concerns have been addressed and countermeasured.
You're welcome
![]() 03/05/2014 at 19:52 |
|
What effect did you notice to the braking? I assume it is something more beyond the likelihood of overheating.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:04 |
|
That's the problem, since the fronts are pretty prone to fading on those stock pirmacys, imagine overpowering them with even bigger tires.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:15 |
|
So I take it they were running stock pads then with the 255 tires? All of the people I have tracked with (most are running either 225 or 235) say that a pad upgrade is all that is needed to stabilize the braking system for 20 minute sessions at stock power levels.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:19 |
|
Pretty much.
I've heard the same for stock cars running track pads, fading goes away pretty well.
But it was more than just braking, the cars rotation is changed. You don't have the right slip angle, even though that doesn't really matter for the streets.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:25 |
|
That may have been due to an improper alignment though, with a 255 it's a LOT more important to get the alignment spot-on than on a 215. They may have just gone with an "in the green" type alignment.
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:27 |
|
True, but over here in long island there aren't that many places to get a spot on alignment. Can you blame him if he want to a Midas? lol
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:29 |
|
I guess its a damn sight better than all those guys running 5 degrees of negative camber up front O.o
![]() 03/05/2014 at 20:32 |

Maximum drift action yo!
![]() 03/05/2014 at 21:21 |
|
In all my.... year.. of working there, I've never seen that type. Just the similar one that's really shitty and uses an integral valve stem. Which cracks. And needs gaskets. And nobody ever gets the gaskets. So they crack. And it comes out of my paycheck.
![]() 03/06/2014 at 08:05 |

It's a GM tpms. So there's that. lol
