As Aya said, the 650S configurator is up. However, I can't get over this here. This kind of plastic vent belongs on a Corolla, not a super car. I am disappoint.

Well, you know, so you'll tick the carbon fibre pack! :D

Is it used on the race car?

Oh, the blocked off for aero vent?

Is that what it's for? If that's it, then I'm ok. If it's for cost saving, that would be bad.

They want to make the grille wrap around stylistically, but an amount is blocked off for aerodynamic and cooling reasons.

Now that you've pointed it out, I simply can't unsee it...

Except the Corolla isn't designed with that in mind for cooling reasons, the 650S is.

It's actually MUCH more common than you think...on every car really...

It's there for a multitude of reasons, usually to limit air intake, but also sometimes the design doesn't permit an actual vent to be there (because there could be a crash structure behind it, electronics, yadda yadda).

Here's the same kind of thing on the Lexus LFA

If it was a pop-out unit for a headlamp washer of something I would not mind as much but yeah, that's one of my biggest automotive pet peeves (other than exposed ffasteners apparently) of recent years. EVERY motherfucker is doing it, and it looks cheap and silly.

Just make the holes fucking holes. K?

There's a reason they aren't holes though.

That's very likely there to hide the crash structure behind it.

I know, I know, but then they can just design around it, eh?

You'd think so

What is the reason? I've always wondered this, back when my cousin had an older Mustang it had what I thought were vents near the doors but turned out to be filled with plastic tabs and never could understand why.

The engineers probably didn't want/need as much air as the full section required.

On some cars this crap is just for show, like the 'scoop' on a Camaro SS, or the vents on the hood of a Veloster.

I wonder what would happen if you removed the plastic.

On this? You'd get more drag and be slower.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the Mustang my cousin had, I figured if the vents were filled with plastic they probably wouldn't go anywhere anyway.
