The car doesn't need more unnecessary tech. What the refreshed Passat needs is new transmissions. A 6MT and 6DSG for the 1.8T, the 7DSG for the TDI (in addition to expansion of the 6MT), and a manual option on the VR6, connected to 4Mo.

Fix the fucking headlights.

Is it just the transmission, or is there more? One of the critiques I've heard was that it just isn't German enough and has no unique selling points other than the diesel engine. Given that this Passat isn't even available in Europe (it gets a totally different Passat) it could be true.

The handling is pretty solid for a full size, FWD cruiser. The 1.8T should be able to fix the "not German enough" powertrain issue. I think the transmissions would be a big part of what needs to be fixed with it.

It also needs better styling. I've been a VW owner all my driving life, and there is absolutely nothing exciting or even vaguely interesting about how that car looks.

I much prefer the clean looking design to say the Sonata or the Fusion.

That's it. When I was looking at cars last May I drove the Passat with the 5 cylinder, the TDI and the CC with the two liter turbo four. The 5 cylinder had almost no trace of German to it; it was bland bland bland. They could have put a Dodge or Chevy label on it and I would have been fooled. The TDI was better; the light diesel rumble helped differentiate it but it still didnt' "drive like a German car". The CC *did* drive like a German car. It's criticized for being softly sprung but I don't really find it that way. I love the turbo 4. I detest the creaky panels on the dashboard. I'm not much on the DSG...it's grabby off the line. But it drives the way I expect a VW to drive, and I've had a few VWs. My wife has an '05 Golf TDI. I have an '02 Beetle 1.8t. I previously had, as company cars, an '04 Passat TDI, an '04 Passat 1.8t wagon, an '07 Passat 2.0T wagon, a '10 Jetta TDI wagon, and now the CC. The US Passat isn't like any of those cars...
