What happened to any new car being affordable?

No really though, for that price, it should at least be a Tahoe/Suburban SS. I know that doesn't actually exist, but it would be all kinds of awesome.

Every new car is a luxury car today, both in terms of being increasingly out-of-reach as well as even the cheapest cars being loaded with features like power windows, a bunch of electronics and infotainment, 10 airbags when 2-4 are sufficient, etc.

I just did the same thing. That could be because the SLT it technically GMC's mid-level trim and they haven't released the Denali yet.

If you don't give us any choice in the matter, then, Yes I suppose we do. And when we are given a choice, but it's between a terrible shit-box with absolutely nothing, and loaded to the gills marked-up models, guess which ones dealers are going to try and sell?

I would very much like to see a return a middle trim level. Only the basic mandated safety equipment, basic media connectivity, alloy wheels, and an available manual transmission. I bet that there would be significant sales.

Now, you can't get anything on a car with the lowest advertised price. They really don't even exist. Go visit any dealer and every car on the lot will have options on it.

Look at the price points on the Avalanche after a few years. Those trucks were ~$45000 and they sell for about a third of that now. I can see the same thing happening with these.

I am willing to bet that the trend continues though. You get more kit on the "base" luxury trim levels and therefore do not have as many options to add later, thus a lower overall purchase price.

Automatch should do a story about this. If you're going to load up an SUV, get the highest trim level you can to save money.
