VANOS fix is only a couple hundred, and (at least in E36s) a DIY-able part. As for the auto, that's all they made the 540iT with. It's a shame, but it's not like there's a choice. But in any case, there are plenty of 540i sedan 6-speeds around should you want to fabricate a swap.
