He gets picked up in a car with dual antennas on the rear deck, the entire course is run with a car lacking dual antennas, then the antennas magically appear again when he pulls in the garage?

Okay, I'll bite. I'd like to know where the antennae went

EDIT: Rewatched. Every shot showing Travis in the car, you can see the antenna through the rear glass. Obviously it was practiced, probably multiple times. I'm guessing the non-antenna shots are from the practice rounds

I'd imagine they shot the exterior separately from the actual thing so they could have real camera men standing around without giving themselves away during the real prank.

Kinja'd!!!1

The antennas plus the laugh he snuffs at 3.52, are enough evidence to me to decide that it was all staged. That we should all believe, because you do not make a real prank like that. Too many legal implications, and one could always have a hidden heart condition and get a heart attack... too risky. But you go on believing in the Tooth Fairy... it's your right:-)

Like others have said, all that album proves is that they spliced in exterior shots from the practice runs. You must be quite close to Travis to be able to judge his emotions from a blurry screencap.

Kinja'd!!! Travis Okulski > Roberto G.
02/27/2014 at 16:18

Kinja'd!!!9

Not staged. I was told afterwards that there were 2 days of practice runs to make sure they could get it all right. That's why there are tire marks. They must have filmed them too and spliced them in if it was better than a shot during my run. Also, I'd imagine they used fewer cameras during my run to not risk me seeing it. Not that I would have. I was too busy being scared.

I know you want it to be fake, and you'll look for anyway for it to be fake, but it isn't fake. My reaction is totally real.

The screencap is just an indication. Watch again the clip, and look carefully from 3.30 onward. If you ever saw someone snuffing a laugh, that's Travis. It doesn't take a genius (which actually I am - my mom told me so) to appreciate that.

I wouldn't be surprised if a particularly intense dab of oppo caused him to have some involuntary good feelings. He's definitely not faking in the beginning, but there's something about the way that he asks to be let out right before the end that sounds real to me.

Kinja'd!!! Bullitt417 > Roberto G.
02/27/2014 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!3

Then again giving the benefit of the doubt, Travis may have filled out a health form to work for Jalopnik, thus giving them the ability to check for hidden conditions. I happen to agree with Ubel about having separate exterior shots so that guys with cameras aren't standing around in an open industrial area while an impromptu chase is supposed to be going on. The Antennas were probably an after thought

Kinja'd!!! Roberto G. > Bullitt417
02/27/2014 at 17:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Bullit, be serious. That is fake. At least, what they show us on the Jalopnik FP is fake: the antennas... I don't want to know of pre-tests: they should have kept those pre-tests for themselves. Instead they mounted them with the real (?) filming and told us it was the true footage of the prank to Travis, but in that way it's a FAKE clip. It's a point. And serious, nomal, grown-up humans know that ALL the advertising is faked: too many implications, to risk with a REAL shoot. That's all.

Kinja'd!!! Mercedes Streeter > Roberto G.
02/27/2014 at 17:08

I dunno, looks to me they just filmed it twice. First time to get all the exterior shots, then again with Travis in the car. Everybody does it, even Top Gear...

But at 3.52 you were snuffing a laugh.

You know that. I know that.

To me it's enough.

Kinja'd!!! Übel > Roberto G.
02/27/2014 at 17:15

Kinja'd!!!0

Sorry, no hard feelings! I certainly believe that the exterior shots were "faked" insofar as they weren't actually filmed during the actual kidnapping, but I also think there's a legitimate reason beyond the whole thing being fake. I just don't see any solid evidence that Travis knew this was going to happen before it did.

And as for legality, I can guarantee it's standard practice to sign plenty of legal agreements, waivers and medical documents included, before test drive events, and it would be fairly simple to word it so as to protect Pepsi in the event of a mishap.

Frankly, considering the circumstances, I just think Pepsi would much rather not do it at all than risk getting caught faking it again. Too much at stake PR-wise, especially with Jalopnik's history of blowing the cover off of this kind of stuff.

Thank you. I've been saying this in every naysayer thread I've seen. It's worth mentioning that Top Gear admits they do the same thing, but for different reasons (driving ahead of the cars, setting up cameras, shooting a small clip, packing up, then trying to get ahead of the cars again is near-impossible).

I'm putting myself in his shoes for a bit, and I probably would have laughed quickly as well. When put in a life-threatening situation like that you're going to be switching emotions like a bipolar squirrel on crack. The disbelief for what's going on probably overwhelmed him for a moment and his brain went "this is completely absurd. This cannot be happening" for a moment, he laughed, then went back to pissing himself.

There's absolutely no way Travis is good enough of an actor to have pulled this off like he did.

To me it looks more like an "I can't believe this shit is happening" reaction on your face at that point, than a look of actual humor. It's actually not uncommon for people to laugh involuntarily during extremely traumatic situations — it's a reflexive way to release tension.

With respect, I've watched the video several times and I haven't seen one "outside the car" action shot (after jeff runs from the cops) that has the antennas on the rear deck.

They didnt splice in the beat shots here and there. They completely refilmed every single exterior action shot without you in the car.

It makes me wonder if Jeff was even driving.

Kinja'd!!! 9.3Vector > area man
02/27/2014 at 20:03

Kinja'd!!!0

They didnt just splice a couple clips here and there. Every exterior shot was done with a car sans-rear antennas. All of them.

Kinja'd!!! Travis Okulski > 9.3Vector
02/27/2014 at 20:52

Kinja'd!!!1

What I'm guessing (I haven't asked anyone) is that those shots were done during the practice runs in the two days leading up that they told me about when I got out of the cab, probably so there was no chance I'd see a camera man on the route.

Look, I don't think I can say anything that will convince you it was a real, terrifying experience, especially if you now doubt Jeff was driving (that's kind of ridiculous to doubt that).

So, my tip is either accept that it's real or move on to something that's actually important in life.

Kinja'd!!! 9.3Vector > Travis Okulski
02/27/2014 at 21:08

Kinja'd!!!0

I think you misunderstand. I don't doubt that Jeff was driving when you were in the car, it's pretty obvious he was. But the equally obvious B-Roll footage for every exterior shot doesn't lend credibility to Jeff driving the car at that time.

I'm guessing you haven't seen very many people close to death. People will often times do very weird things, such as laugh, when they think they're going to die. It is some sort of stress response. I have no idea whether this was real or not, but saying its not because it looks like he almost laughed is stupid and poorly thought out.
