so I have a question for you Opponauts in the U.S. of A. I like to keep pretty neutral on political conversations with others and I know the media will swamp me with it anyhow. How hot does it get on OPPO? Do we keep it as it should be and just focus on politics as it regards to cars, or do we have some extreme views that come to the front and get hashed out by the masses? Just curious from those that have been here long enough to see it so I can know now if I should plan on tuning out in a few months. Thanks

I believe we've got the general rule that politics should be in a reply or after a break. Like NSFW content. So there shouldn't be any reason for you to avoid the site due to politics.

Discussing politics is treated like NSFW. Discussing it/debating it is ok, provided the post starts with some sort of "Warning: politics below the jump" lead and a non-political safe image. Debating and defending your side of the argument is ok, personal attacks and insults during the debate are not. That said it's pretty rare for political debates to actually take place around this part.

As long as you give fair warning "Politics After the Jump" you should be fine. Just be prepared for heated discussion depending on the content. While we all love cars here the political and social spectrum of Oppo is quite varied. That being said I am confident that a mature discourse can be attained regardless of topic.

Car related things at most. Politics in general just divide and create animosity. Neither of which make for good conversation.

I've learned to avoid reading any posts on here that have political and/or religious connotations. Way to many people lack any sort of civility when making comments about positions/thoughts they disagree with. So for me not reading them is the easiest way to avoid getting in a flame war.

If I want to argue politics there are other sites for me to do that on.

i treat politics like the joke it is. it's fun to see people get worked up about something they can't do anything about. plus, politics is where the best conspiracies hide.

Well, cars can be quite divisive and create animosity as well. There are certain segments of vehicles and certain sub cultures I don't like or even detest, and I'm sure this is true for most other people as well. The key to a pleasant experience is to handle differences of opinion in a mature way. I think we on Oppo handle differences of opinion quite well. When it comes to cars. Let's hope we can treat politics (hidden behind a safety break) the same way. There's no rational reason why we shouldn't.

While some people take their car affiliations seriously, a lot more take their political views personally. I doubt anyone feels a moral, philosophical, or religious imperative to support a certain car or manufacturer, whereas all of those are deep and meaningful reasons for support of political parties and ideas. I just saying the ice is a lot thinner when you start tip-toeing (or in some cases, stomping) around political issues people take to heart.

That said, Oppo does get into the taboo areas of religion and politics from time to time. A fair warning in the title helps.

The only big political stuff I've ever seen on here is either car related or gun related. Other than that people try and keep it to a minimum, which is great by me.
