I suspect it was an innocent mistake, but someone recently posted an animated .gif of the crash that killed Dan Weldon. I moved it to their Drafts page, as I do not want snuff films to become a thing here.

Agreed. There is nothing funny or clever about that incident. No need to have that kind of thing around here.

Whew, that was close. Can't let people know that racing is dangerous and that people have died doing it, they might get the wrong idea. Especially if a video contains footage that looks like a ton of other open wheel car wrecks and shows absolutely nothing graphic, have to protect the delicate sensibilities of the internet...

The animation posted is recognizable as a fatal accident that no longer has immediate news value. That's why it was removed.

Fair enough. I still think it is dumb, because not posting the video isn't ever going to bring someone back to life or change what already happened, but at least it was done with a reason.

Besides, there are several on Oppo who knew/were close with Weldon (I'm not one, for the record, but still...). It's rather insensitive to those who knew him to be putting his death front and center for why exactly?

I see your point, but pretending it didn't happen or never showing the video doesn't change what happened, it doesn't bring him back to life. The only reason to not show a video like this is so people don't get their feelings hurt, and this whole world cares way too much about people's hurt feelings. People die, bad shit happens, grow up and get over it.

No one's pretending anything, and it's called common courtesy to not rub a person's death in their friend's face. Only an asshole posts offensive/painful material without warning and then tells the other person to "grow up." Are you an asshole? Didn't think so.

I admit I didn't see the original post, but I highly doubt the post said "haha look at this dead guy just dying like that, his friends and family must be super embarrassed that he just up and died in a fireball like that, haha." So saying that they were rubbing anyone's face in it is more than a little disingenuous.

The point is that "someone might be offended" isn't a valid reason to remove a post. Posting an autosports video on an autosports website shouldn't be against the rules. If I told you that your post offended me and made me sad the only appropriate response is: "fuck off." The difference is that I wouldn't do that, because I am mature enough to just close the tab if something I'm reading bothers me and don't expect the world to cater to my delicate sensibilities.

If you're offended by something that is nobody's problem but your own. So again, grow up. George Carlin would be deeply saddened by the pansy ass don't-hurt-anyone's-feelings world we live in. I hope someday all you pussies die off and leave the world to those of us mature enough to deal with having our feelings hurt.

Dude, you are missing the point this is not about being overly PC or "bringing someone back." Oppo is a community, we value all our members here and have for a long time cultivated an environment that is above your typical internet car forum that is often nothing but egos and pissing contests.

Maybe you haven't been around enough to notice that. So please be mindful that as commenter here you are not an island.

And posting a video that doesn't show anything graphic (again, no "snuff" at all in the video, just a wreck and subsequent fire, like so many other videos posted here) that is relevant to autosports in a community about cars makes it about egos or pissing contests how exactly? If anything the "better hide this because I know what is best for everyone" attitude is pretty fucking egotistical and reeks of wanting to feel important and powerful. There's plenty of crash videos posted here, plenty posted without knowing what happened to all involved, there's tons of NSFW content posted here, but somehow a specific video showing a specific crash is banned because it might make someone uncomfortable? Porn might make female members uncomfortable, might remind them of bad things that have happened in their lives, but the "above your typical internet car forum" doesn't care if they are offended, because tits (which totally isn't just like every other car forum on the internet). Just a specific group of people that maybe knew a guy that might possibly be reminded that nobody lives forever, or that in the past people doing dangerous things have died (i wonder if that's why they call things dangerous), those are the only people who need protection? Maybe I missed the rule book where rule number one is "rules are totally arbitrary, and will be applied differently everywhere, herka-durrrr" or something.
