CP. 15 year old BMW (and one that is especially known for durability issues), 160k? If you're looking for an e39 I wouldn't buy anything before the refresh in 2001.

I had no idea the 540 had durability issues. So I'm guessing it would be better to go for a 535 or 528?

Well keep in mind that it is really probably the best to stay away from any German cars that are over 10 years old. There is a reason a 2001 7 series that cost $90k new is going for $8988 at sketchy used car lots all over the country. The 8 cylinder, while obviously increasing power, also increases repair costs exponentially (some people would suggest you might as well go for the M5 as it costs as much to repair, but depreciates slower). The 528 and 530 are supposedly more reliable, but I would get a thorough, thorough pre-sale inspection before pulling the trigger on one.

That's all true. I don't think I could go for an M5 because my insurance as a 16-year-old would be ungodly high, plus I'm stuck at a $5000 maximum budget. Maybe I'll just stick to something domestic.

So you're 16, with a budget of $5k? Forget the insurance, you're going to drift any car with that much power into a telephone pole, probably within a week of buying it! That's like getting your motorcycle endorsement and immediately jumping on a Hayabusa! :P What do you like domestically? Do you have an issue with Japanese cars?

It's not so much I have a problem with Japanese cars, it's more my dad wants me to get something domestic. He's owned GM all his life so he wants me to. I'll probably look into a late model Camaro.

540i with a man pedal, eh?

A couple years ago, a friend of mine bought one. I'll call him Uno. So after Uno bought his 150k mile Bimmer, another friend of mine, Dos, and I were having some small talk. I mentioned to Dos that Uno had bought a German car with 150k miles. This lead to Dos and I making a bet (of a beer) that within a month Uno would have to do some kind of repair that cost at least a few hundred dollars.

To shorten the story, I had a beer.

Uno has over 180k on his Bimmer now, and the only expensive repair he's had to do so far is the radiator, and E39s are known to have coolant system issues.

That's my related story.

I learned the glories of BMW cooling systems when my girlfriends decided to freak out on her a few months back. It was definitely interesting trying to get the thing back to a gas station without the whole thing destroying itself.
