Now I'm a crazy Porsche enthusiast; most of my friends will tell you that. But when I see something sad like this, or any opportunity like this, my Imagination simply runs wild.
Before all of this happened, short story explaining why I'm conflicted now:
Short Story: I was originally gonna get a 1985.5 944 from my uncle. My current DDs tranny broke, $2700 fix, Dad gets pissed at Saturn and foreign cars(he has a 911), tells me I can only get a domestic car as DD, I get pissed, he offers to get me a Focus ST, I happily oblige.
My Uncle's supposedly gonna sell that 944 and try to find a 944 Turbo. I wish he wouldn't sell it just yet; or at least not for $4k because I still want it and yet I cannot have it right now. :(
(picture from craigslist post)

Description: I'm selling my 1985.5 porsche 944. it turns over but doesn't start. my guess is fuel lines or injectors but i'm not sure and i'd honestly rather not have a project car right now. i posted picture and can give more info but for now its a manual, not sure of miles because odometer is tampered with. The paint is faded because of the sun and so is the interior but it has no dents or rust. call if interested. price is negotiable if your going to tell me you have cash on hand and are ready to come get the car now.
There's a 1985.5 Porsche 944 for sale about 15 minutes away from me for $900! "What a steal!" I'm thinking; but I know how these money pits work. You'll end up putting more money into them rather then coming out green in the end(sometimes you get lucky though); but you'll get such a rewarding drive and experience in the end, working on the car and all. Porsche-fever has me again as always.
The crazy idea running through my head ATM(mind you I'm already getting a '14 Focus ST in a couple weeks) is to get the car for $500(or less) in cash, stash it somewhere my dad won't find it(can't think of a place yet), and slowly restore it as my own(second) car. Now, my dad who has a '74 911 that I frequently talk about, and maintain as best as I can for him during the winter and he refuses to ever let me drive, said no the first time I told him about this car a couple weeks ago. But I cannot stand to watch this perfect opportunity pass and let it rot away. I'm conflicted guys, what should I do? It pains me to see it stand around rather than be fixed; but maybe I'm not being realistic.
Realistically, I'm a college student in his second semester who has an okay job with slightly above minimum wage, who lives on campus and already has a car. Not sure I have realistic funds to get the car moving in a month if I had it but it'd certainly take about a year I reckon.
If I cannot save it, can someone else on here save it? It'd be cool to make this a joint-buy we a group of people and work on it together.

DON'T DO IT!!!!
or DO, if you have time, money, and space.

I tried the same thing because I'm the same way. This answer will suck, but you need to hear it - Let it go.
I too tried to buy a 944 behind my parent's backs and stash it and was thinking I was going to do something crazy. It didn't work. At all. Not even close. Your *best* chance would be to get your parents to buy you a cheaper car than the Focus and use the money they saved to also get you the 944 on the agreement you pay for its storage and repairs. And that "best case" scenario relies on many variables working in your favor that involve parents. So, have fun with that.
Wait until you've got a decent income before buying your unreliable german car. I did, and I'm glad I did. It is currently not working but that's okay. It is also a massive money pit but that is still okay.

What happened to your 944? I wouldn't go for this. Personally I think 944's like that are a dime a dozen, even at that price.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:02 |
|
Oh and you're not buying a car, you're buying an ever growing "to do" list. I know it sounds like sacrelige but that car is not worth saving unless you plan to gut it for a race car.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:04 |
|
Agreed. The rule I've come up with for cars like this is "For every 500$ you spend on the initial car, you save 1000$ in repairs and restoration"

Listen man I tried that earlier (having them talk me out of a car) and it went horribly wrong!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And ironically enough I'm in the same boat. I have a 2013 Civic I am leasing... I want this 93 Saab though so badly. It is only $1000. Problem is my dad doesn't want me to have it and it'll be a big money pit.
I'm 16 and a sophomore in high school.. I want two cars. I feel that this Saab is perfect. I want to (read need to) learn to drive stick and it could be my perfect chance.. for only $1000??
Good luck!

Well A LOT happened in the time between my 944 post and now.
Short Story: My current DDs tranny broke, $2700 fix, Dad gets pissed at Saturn and foreign cars(he has a 911), tells me I can only get a domestic car as DD, I get pissed, he offers to get me a Focus ST, I happily oblige.
My Uncle's supposedly gonna sell that 944 and try to find a 944 Turbo. I wish he wouldn't sell it just yet; or at least not for $4k because I still want it and yet I cannot have it right now. :(
Glad to here from you again though, it's been a while. :)

If you're lucky.

oh jeez your only 16?
still cant think of a good reason to not get the saab.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:08 |

I understand your situation. Honestly, if I was going for an off the lot DD, the Fiesta ST would be very high up on my list. I still have a bit of stuff to take care of on my 944, haven't been driving her too much recently. Long story short, need $$$$$$$$$$.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:08 |

I bet you could easily get more than 1000 for parting it out too.

I'll expound on this - you *hope* the engine just has a fuel delivery issue. That could be anything from a simple fuel filter replacement to needing the entire fuel SYSTEM - lines, pump, filter, injectors, and all the little fittings and whatnot that goes with them. That alone is daunting, but then you also need to understand it could need a new ignition system, a new EC, the engine could be blown, the timing could be amazingly borked, and this is all JUST THE ENGINE! You know NOTHING of the suspension or transmission health because you can't drive it.
However, there is a savior for this car - Racing. If you go racing, you're doing a lot of stripping and parts replacements already. A fuel cell would probably be accompanied with a new pump and fresh lines to comply with rules and regulations. Suspension upgrades will junk any tired suspension components anyways. The faded exterior is of no consequence. "Needing a new transmission" is just a fancy way of saying "Let's put a 6-speed in this bitch!". So again, if you want a racing car - that is the base car to buy. For a secret road car? When you're a teenager living with your parents? I want you to do it only so I can laugh at you.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:12 |

Ah, so you're having the money problem synonymous with all used 944s now too? I'm sorry to hear that; but from the looks of the winters in NYC, I reckon there isn't really a reason to drive it now anyway? There aren't any Fiesta STs in my general area and the Focus suits me much better so I went with that. maybe one day he'll let me drive his 911 and I can stop having the Porsche-driving bug I've had for the past 15 years! :(
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:14 |

Don't do it. You don't want to piss of your dad that is buying you a brand new $20k+ car by getting yourself a money pit. Finish college, get a job, then worry about project cars. Believe me, it will make it much easier, especially since you won't have to HIDE it! Also, I guarantee you that you can find a deal like this again.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:17 |

reality is a cruel mistress isn't it. :(
I'm well aware of the high maintenance these cars, like all classic P-cars require. These cars need people with big wallets, time and space, or in my case, dreams and hopes that simply cannot be met right now. timing belts are one of the biggest problems for these cars as well; blame overly complicated German engineering FTW! As I don't intend to do any kind of racing, the Focus ST will have to hold me over until I can buy a decent(read as better) one on my own.

I'm only 18 :(

Learn to drive stick on an old 900 and you can drive anything after that.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:20 |

I know I can find another. one always pops up on Craigslist because the owner doesn't want a moneypit or project car, or they simply have too many cars!
I truthfully want a Porsche I can call my own, drive it every day like they're intended to be; that is my dream. If it wasn't for my dad and my uncle and their 911, 944 and two other 911s respectively, I wouldn't be where I am today: loving cars, driving them, I wouldn't have decided to study to become an engineer or hell, I wouldn't even be on this site! I owe my life and future to them and Porsche really.

Eh, just gotta get rid of some parking tickets and purchase a newer exhaust (mine rusted through). Those are the main things. Also a wheel bearing seal.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:22 |
|
The chaotic part of me wants you to do it, but blog your experiences. When I tried doing this, twitter wasn't a thing yet. Facebook was, but I wasn't on it at the time. It was a farce of me trying to sell my chevy to buy a subaru and a 944. It almost maybe worked....until my mom came out as I was selling the chevy.
The worst part - I was trying to buy a suabru SVX.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:23 |

Hmm. Check some of the forums, I'm sure(read as think) you could find an OEM exhaust for sale somewhere if you want to keep your car OEM.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:23 |
|
Thats what I heard haha.. should be a great experience if I can get it!
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:25 |

Awww! That SVX would've been sooo cool though! :(
Guess I'll have to wait another 5-6 years before I can fully realize my dream...
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:27 |

True. If I parted it out, IF I did that, I'd probably come out of it positive but be mentally scarred by tearing apart a Porsche. How bad is it? I rewind every time I, someone or something dents my Porsche on Forza 4, the only cars I ever rewind the damage on(Besides a Focus ST).

One hell of a dream garage for an 18 year old - SVX daily driver and a 944 fun car......but I made do with what I had.

buddy, i turned 19 today.
if your parents are buying you a friggen brand new focus st, forget the porsche. i know you really want it and what not, but its not for you at this point.
at saab for the fellow above is a little different. saabs can be held on and sold a little later for a bit of a profit to the hard core guys.
this Porsche? not to much. id skip it, and save that 900 bucks for gas for the ST. believe you, you will desperately need it (example: i was able to get a 09 Sv650 MOTORCYCLE[with some help from mom and dad] to do the school run with. i was riding that thing so much in the first week i had used 300 bucks worth of gas. on a motorcycle. take that into consideration for a minute)
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:29 |
|
Still though, I wouldn't piss of your dad by trying to hide a car from him. I know 2 (or 3) years is a while but just wait until you graduate or at least have talked your dad into the idea of getting a project car. Believe me, I am still waiting to get my dream car (my dad's old 03 Cobra) but then again I got married and bought a house so that kind of got in the way haha.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:29 |

I'm actually gonna be making half the payments on the car too. My dad and I will be splitting it 50/50. So being even more hopelessly realistic, I have to let it go.... :(
Happy Birthday by the way.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:31 |

My first Saab 900 still holds a very key place in my heart, some 16 years later. It was a great car, as were the 2 dozen other Saabs I bought, sold, traded, parted, and most of all enjoyed over the last 16 years.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:32 |

even more the reason to not get it.
(if you down though, id happily partake in a lemons once for shits and giggles. maybe we can do a thing with some of the younger oppo on here...)
thganks for the birthday wishes XD. still recovering from the drinking (drinking is 19 here in canada)

My dream car is sitting in my garage right now as I type this('74 911), he's had the car 40 years as of this year and we've been slowly getting it back together since about '09-11. If he'll just let me drive it ONCE, I'll be the happiest kid alive. I know that in a couple years, It'd be just so perfect to have my dream Focus and my and a 944, but I'd be stupid if I got the 944.

I'm right across the river from you in Michigan!

I was looking for a Dansk exhaust and also Borla headers but the setup would be too pricey for me right now. I found a guy willing to sell me an OEM, used (I think), for $100. Will probably go for that soon.

I drove the lolcar for 5 years. I drove it from 2006 to 2011 and drove a buick riviera for a year. I now have a 1991 Audi 200 and a 1998 VW Jetta. The Audi is named "Nadia" and the jetta is "Bierwagen". Bierwagen tried to kill me once .

why tickets? it on a track...and we could buy a beater motor money, build a beater trailer, and do everything as cheap as friggen possible (come to think of it, i might have a car we can use...its an auto, but its got a reliablie motor...)
![]() 02/24/2014 at 00:40 |

Yeah, I'd go with whatever can get the car back on the road quickest(depending on how fast you need it of course) then save up for what you'd like to add for later.

Nice rides. I remember that story! I've been trying to think up a name for the ST before it gets here...
Any future plans?

That'd be some hilarious Hooning about no doubt about it!

I ordered a fiesta ST. It comes in the second week of march. Bierwagen is getting sold to a coworker. Nadia will become either my rally car or my road stormer. Haven't decided yet but after I put the engine back together, the suspension needs to be replaced.

I want this sedan though

I'm like the 6th or 7th to get a fiesta ST and another dozen or so got FoSTs last year........so basically there's a bunch of us on here. We could have an Oppo exclusive ST club and probably get 50+ members before the end of the year at the rate they're selling.

The "Oppo ST Club" OSC! That'd be pretty cool! have you checked out the ST forums yet? They're very helpful from my experience.
I'm on this one:
Here's the Fiesta-specific equivalent:

College student making minimum wage? Two paths:
Pour all your time, money, and energy into making a beat up Porsche halfway run, spend any time you aren't working on it enjoying it, have your grades suffer, switch to a fake major, make less money and have less car enjoyment forever, or...
Drive practical beater, waste minimal money and time on it (since it's not that fun), major in something hard that involves math, make twice what your friends do straight out of college, but live the same lifestyle and bank the difference. Buy used Cayman, S4, etc, with bonus of making more forever.
![]() 02/24/2014 at 02:15 |

I like the last idea up until you said "Buy used Cayman". :P
As much as people will argue the Cayman is better than the 911, I'll still take the 911(G-series, 964, 993, 991 are the four I want to own)! I might make a PollTime on that now that you've mentioned it...

Let it go. One day you will be in a position where you can find a nice porker and save it, today is not that day. The car isn't special, you're getting a new ST. Just try to think how lucky you are before you piss off the person currently supporting your automotive habit, my parents would not ever even think of buying me a car, let alone a new one.
In ten years time you will decide that you really need to fill the spare space in your double garage, and you will tell this story to the person you buy that "well loved but needing work" Stuttgart machine off.

Aaron I have a used OEM cat/muffler off a 86 944 that would need a piece of center pipe that I would GIVE you if you paid the shipping for free. I'll get some pics tonight when I get home if you want.

Sounds tempting! How's the condition and where are you located?
![]() 02/24/2014 at 09:24 |
|
Condition: Appear to be fine (I'll get pics tonight and post em), my son was rear ended and it bent the piece of pipe between the cat and the muffler into a Z shape and broke the pipe in front of the cat off right at the cat entrance. I can cut the mid pipe off and leave you a few inches so you don't have to pay to ship that but you will have to have a muffler shop weld pipe to the front of the cat and then weld a piece of pipe between cat/muffler and should be ok.

You're right, it is a 944 S2 Cab. Not sure what I was thinking.
