Whether it was on a track, though a mountain pass, or while drinking coffee and looking at cars, loosing your Earginity (yup, I went there) is a big moment in an automotive enthusiast's life. The strange thing about Earginity is that you can loose it more than once, and to an even greater degree!

If you can't pick, show us your first.

Side Note: Someone here took this picture, but I can't remember who; please tell so I can praise you for it.

My first time was a Fiat Sypder. The song they make in third gear as they wind through the top half of the rpm gauge is positively intoxicating.

This. I heard one in downtown Atlanta when I was there last spring for a conference, and I swear it was like the entire heavenly choir descended upon the city, to provide us with their song.

It sent shivers down my spine, that's how awesome it was.

This one, I'll concur with, as well. Run a Spider with an open exhaust, and it's an intoxicating noise.

1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake.

427 side oiler with that paxton supercharger.

It was probably the only engine that gave me goosebumps. 1200+ horsepower and massive side pipes.

A close second would be the Ultima GTR twin turbo V8.

Ford GT. I was driving down the highway and I see this short car crest a hill. It creeps further up on me. Red, white stripes. Immediately say something like "holy crap Ford GT" to whomever was in the car with me, or to myself I dunno. It's in the right lane, and then as its getting up to me, he shifts over to the left lane and just opened up right there. Rocketed up to like 80 or 90 from ~60 holy hell that thing was nice

Me, 12 years old in 1973, just starting to become interested in cars. (My childhood hero, Jean Sheppard, had a monthly column in "Car and Driver.") . Our up the street neighbor coming home in his brand new Ferrari Daytona.

At full noise

Whilst I was driving next to it

Guy who works near me has a slightly tuned version, which a much better exhaust.

Stock version is a great sounding car. With a new exhaust it sounds epic.

There's two of these that prowl around my town during the better months of the year. They are truly incredible. Even video doesn't properly do them justice. This is the best sounding production engine I've ever heard in person so yeah, this.

It really is an engine that sounds as good as the car looks. I don't care if the car isn't that fast or doesn't handle that well. It is one of the best looking cars on the road and sounds just as good.

The first Lemons event we went to had us setting up and doing tech during a club track day for the local members and the whole time I kept hearing this car whip around the track and kept saying to myself "What the fuck is that thing?" only to see it pulling off at the end of the sessions, turns out it was an MP4-12C and it was glorious.

That being said, the best sounding car I have ever heard was actually a new VW Golf R, I have no clue what exhaust/intake/turbo that thing had, but hearing it on the autocross course was a mixture of intake noise and pure guttural fury.

First up, engines not engine. Secondly, I'm pretty sure that the fact that they made a good number of these (the Mercedes guys have supposedly made over a thousand F1 V8s) of these over a span of 8 years, plus the fact that they sell these to customer teams is enough to make them count as "production".

During the race in Singapore in 2010, for a few moments, I tried to be brave and took off my earplugs. The result is probably the closest any man will ever feel to literally getting their mind blown by an engine.

This. Ok, so this is a racing-tuned version, but when I blew out the flex pipe on my '92 164-S I actually paid TWO defective equipment tickets before I fixed it just so I could keep listening to the glorious noise a 3.0l Busso V6 with hot cams makes between 5000-7000 RPM.

In August 2011 the EVO magazine wrote " the original Alfa Romeo V6 was the most-glorius sounding six cylinder road engine ever ."

You are most welcome! I figure the VR6 has been responsible for delivering more aural pleasure to petrol heads around the world than just about any motor since the original 240/260/280Z's S30 Inline-6 (simply based on production numbers).

So it's not Italian, but it should merit a spot on anybody's top list based on that combination of (aural) quality and quantity (produced).

The later W8 motor with it's 'flat-plane' firing order was also decidedly non -VW-sounding, especially once it had been uncorked.
