Driving home tonight on I-84 West into the construction zone in Newtown when all of the sudden WHAM! We discovered this when we got home, but we were really lucky. This is only a steel wheel and the snow tire appears undamaged. There were probably two dozen cars either stopped on the side of the road or limping to the next exit with damage.

Edit:
Was it the construction they're doing on the bridge?

The great thing about steel is that you can just whang it back into shape with a hammer. Mega Clarkson points.

I beat it back somewhat, but not as far as I'd like. I also don't know the condition of the inside bead.

And this is photographic evidence of why I look like a drunk driver when I drive home on the I-395 and I-95

I'd have thought this is the kind of situation where you'll have no trouble claiming for any damage from the responsible authority, given the number of people you say were affected. But then any tyre shop that knows which side their bread is buttered will check things out for free, so there's probably nothing worth claiming.

I think it was either the snow melt washing the temporary asphalt that covered the seam between the regular roadway and the construction work, or the seam between the roadway and the bridge span. It was really dark.

This is nothing. I've seen alloy wheels shattered into 20 pieces and tires with 6" holes ripped in the side from potholes around by me. We'd have that bend fixed in 3 minutes at the shop I worked at last year.

We have all seen badly bent wheels for the most part, he was just sharing his experience

Sorry, don't mean to sound snobbish if that's how it came across. Damn internet still doesn't have a "tone of voice" function...

Wasn't really tone of voice at all, it was the whole, "this is nothing", I mean yeah for everything that happens someone has experienced something worse, but when it happens to you it is worth sharing especially if it was the first time it's happened to you.

I am sorry. I understand this and for this to be the first time this has happened to someone, it really is something.

It's all good man, just didn't know if you were one of those "I walked uphill both ways!" Kind of people if you know what I mean. Good wheel shops are a god send because most are shit. As shitty as it sounds, I'm just glad the first time I experienced this it wasn't in my car but my friends, he had gone way the shit out far to check out a car that was listed for free and he called the guy to make sure and when he got there he was like no man 2500. And so he drove home and it was like 2 am, wasn't paying close enough attention and slowly went over the shoulder (live in the northern va so ditches are everywhere on non interstate roads) and went into a ditch, broke both cv axles on his corolla and bent the ever living shit out of the wheel. I was amazed at the amount of damage that happened

Moral of the story: No car listed for free is actually going to be free.

Either that or when you show up you are going to lose a kidney
