It irks me when people call it the "fast lane". I understand that slower traffic should keep right and therefore 'faster' traffic would be on the left, but the lanes are not any faster or slower than the other.
If it were 1am and you were the only car on the road, the right lane would be the "fastest" lane. It's only "slower" when there are other vehicles traveling slower than the speed limit in that lane.
I also feel that by continually referring to this lane as the passing lane (as it should be) would help to ember the idea into the sheeples heads that this lane is for passing, not for hanging out in because you are going "fast" by your standards.

Well it is by definition the passing lane on all 2 way, lanes each way highways
When you get more than 2 lanes going in one direction, then you get the "fast lane" idea.
Personally, I believe the "Autobahn" concept is the best way to go about highways. Allow people to go as fast as they want in the fast lane, but make it mandatory to move over when a faster vehicle comes up behind you.
I would also impose fines on truckers/ large vehicle drivers overtaking on roads where there are less than 3 lanes going in the same direction. I'm sure you can deal with going 61.5mph instead of 61.8mph for another mile or two until the road widens

I agree with the autobahn bit, but, since we can't just say "but the autobahn has no speed limit" we have to conform to the speed limits and such.

yeah conforming to the speed limit would be crutial in this case. By "as fast as they want" I meant give the fast lane say an 85 mph speed limit, as opposed to the 65 or 70 of the other lanes. you gotta speed up to get on to the freeway, why shouldn't you need to speed up to get in to the "fast" lane?

Because in USA, its a passing lane, not a fast lane (I get the hypothetical, but you are actually helping me make my point).
