If I had a garage where I could completely strip that car down and start from the ground up I would definitely do it

I know the feeling. Been 5 years since I went to Fla and yanked a car back. No interest. But I want so much

Engine braking is his friend.

Actually I assume he would go with a trailer

I would hope so, it says it also needs a cooling system as well, so the engine braking is out of the question.

Yeah, I can see myself getting this as some sort of fun project if I had a garage, and two fully capable and reliable DD's, would never trust this car to carry me more then a day or two in a row. Honestly I'd probably make it some sort of auto x or rally fighter.

This would be a glorious restomod, just drop in a the guts of a base Toyota Corolla, and you'd have the best of both worlds - Italian style and Japanese reliability.

This is a mid-70s Lancia with a mid-70s smog engine. I bet it makes 70-80 hp on a good day. The 1.8 I-4 from a Corolla makes 132 hp, and is probably dead simple to service, when it needs service. Plus, the trans is designed to handle a car weighing 2,800+ lbs vs the 2,200 lb weight of this Lancia. Fundamentally reliable and hugely understressed makes for a bulletproof drivetrain.

I think one could do it for less than $5k.

It's rear engined. The transmission and gearing would be totally bass-ackwards. What you'd want is the powertrain from an MR2.

No, the Scorpion is not rear-engined. Go take a look at the rear overhang - there simply isn't room to hang the engine behind the rear axle, upright transverse or not.

The Scorpion is mid-engined, with the engine sitting in front of the rear axle - exactly where the engine sits relative to the front axle of a Corolla. This gives better handling and weight distribution.

Finally, the MR2 powertrain is the same as the one in the Corolla. The difference being that the Corolla is a lot more common and easier to source.

Forgive me, I misspoke. You're correct, rear-mid engine is the placement, as it is on the MR2. What I don't understand is how you claim that the powertrain is the same between the Corolla and MR2. Yes, in the first generation the engine is the same but the transmission or transaxle cannot possibly be the same. The Corolla drivetrain is intended to face the opposite direction, with the transmission pointed towards the rear of the car rather than forwards as it is in the MR2 and the Lancia. It seems to me it would make much more sense to source a drivetrain already oriented in the correct direction. Also, MR2s came with a supercharger or turbocharger stock on some models, worth the price in my opinion.

That said, I could be mistaken. My experience is with front engine rear drive setups, for the most part. I've owned a couple of front drive econoboxes but never got into the mechanical side of those much. I've never owned a rear-mid configuration vehicle let alone researched engine / tranny swaps on them.
