Recently I've seen some amazing custom Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, and I've gotten inspired to try my hand. I've never built or painted models before, so this is all new to me. I used the paints my wife had for her craft projects and started painting. A Matchbox Land Rover Defender seemed like a great casting to start with, as I just wanted to do some detailing. That body-yellow snorkel was driving me nuts. So I started there, then did the roof rack, ladder, touched up the wheel wells, other little details, all the lights, and blacked out the wheels. Then I sprayed it with a dullcote. It's not perfect, but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out! Oh, the pics are on my first real diorama too. Carved out of pink insulation foam, then painted and textured.

Please let me know if the images show up. I've had trouble getting posts to work in the past. Thanks!

When I click on the Insert Image icon, then grab the link from the flickr image, nothing ever shows up in my post. After I posted this, I've got five non-loading image windows with blue question marks in them. How do I fix this?

It may be that I'm on an older browser on a not up-to-date mac. I dunno.

Interesting. I just found this too, on flickr. I thought that was the link I was grabbing.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The HTML code to embed a photo in a web page that you used to find on the All Sizes page is now only in the Share menu on the photo, to the left of the More menu. We now also include BBCode ! (standard message board code)

There are a few cases where the code may not be available: 1) If the photo is restricted. 2) If that person has turned off "Share this" or access to original files.

The direct link to a photo file is no longer shown on the page. Per the Flickr Community Guidelines "pages on other websites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr." Linking directly to the photo file doesn't do this.

So, I successfully posted on in the comments, but I can't get it to work when I use the same method while editing my original post! Is it me, or kinja . . .

from the pics that worked it looks fantastic!

"matchbox" 1/64-ish scale is my favourite, I love to see them modded.

do you have a before image? I'm having some trouble really seeing the full extent fo the detail you added

That looks awesome! Way better than modern Matchbox or Hot Wheel cars, where it's amazing to see one with headlights colored different from the grille, much less the turn signals. Sweet diorama too. Did you use model train landscaping?

For reference:

Thanks! Yes, I used some stuff from Woodland Scenics to do the diorama. I was really surprised to see that the orange LR you posted was $4.97 while the yellow one I bought was the usual $0.97. I guess the orange is more collectible, somhow.

I don't, but even if I did I doubt I could post it here! I really don't understand kinja . . .

Anyway, I googled "matchbox yellow land rover defender" and a bunch came right up. The side panels with the LR logo were already done, and the sides of the roof rack had a little black on them, but that was about it. Like I posted, the snorkel is where it all started. I couldn't stand having it yellow.
