Earlier this morning I posted a brief write-up about my thoughts on the Need For Speed movie (read it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! if you want to). In that post I briefly mentioned my two, so far, epiphanies in life. The first is "If you always expect the worst, you'll never be disappointed". The second epiphany is that "small dogs make the best cats."
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
One commenter seemed to take issue with my second epiphany, even though it had nothing to do with the overall article. I strongly maintain my view point, and no longer wish to respond to his comments. I invite the Opponauts to decide, and put this issue to rest forever! Link to poll below, vote if you want, or don't. This issue totally doesn't matter.

A Cat. Definitely. Cats are cool. Small dogs are annoying, yappy, and not really all that cute (except for corgis, Shiba Inus and beagles. Beagles are big dogs trapped in small bodies). They require more attention and "maintenance." Cats are perfect for an apartment. Dogs require so much work.
That being said, I think a Labrador Retriever is the perfect companion.

My girlfriend house sit some little tiny dogs, and they were just pitiful excuses. They aren't even that cute.

people with tiny dogs have 1 chance. the first puddle of piddle, or cute little turd i find the little rat gets rubbed in bacon grease and tossed to the big dogs.

No, you are wrong. Small dogs are, in my experience, vicious little bastards because they know, THEY KNOW, they could have been bigger, but we humans bred them down to be weak and pathetic little lap animals. Cats, on the other hand, are totally cool with what they are. They know they can get by perfectly as they are in the wild or in the home. I've run into a couple of crazy cats, but they're usually old & senile. All the small dogs I see are ankle biters that could use some tranquilizers to calm the fuck down.

I don't really dig cats, and they don't really like me, but I'd probably take a cat over a "miniature" any day. Some of the naturally smaller breeds are fine, but miniatures? No way.
Or maybe I'd just get a lizard, or some goldfish.

Disagree. Our cat was kind of an asshole as a kitten. Now he's older and fatter and chill, he's actually a lot of fun.

Dogs > cats. Every. Freakin. Day.
I have a smallish (25lbs) Jack Russell. He's like a cat in that he cleans himself, won't go outside if its raining, avoids mud at all costs, eats only perfectly prepared food, wants to sleep on the couch/bed, etc
I have a 60 lb pitbull as well. Everything I said about the JRT, she's the opposite.

Cat, hands down. They need minimal attention, food, and leave their waste in a single area to clean up. Plus indoor cats are 24/7 exterminators keeping all sorts of incects out of you home, and outdoor cats kill all sorts of vermin and pests that try and nest in your attic and tear up your garden. Above all, they're fairly self-contained.

My shihtzu eats, shits, sits on my laptop while I try to do work cause hes a goon and generally just stays quiet and out of the way apart from looking at you with devious eyes when you eat food.
Its perfect.
I can't have a large dog because I have no space for a large dog.

I have two dachshunds at my dad's house and a lab and boxer at my moms house. The dachshunds are much worse than my big dogs although maybe my step mom just wasn't a good dog trainer

I'll flip your question on its head, and say that social cats make the best small dogs. These are most often male cats, as its usually the female cats who want nothing to do with humans.
Social cats are excited when you get home, and want to play/be petted, but just a little, not so much that they get annoying like needy small dogs often do. I also like that our cat doesn't have to bother me to when he needs to piss or take a dump, Hamster's got that covered on his own (yes, our cat's name is Hamster).

i'm giving you a star even though i only grew up with dogs, and are partial to them, of course. I didn't realize that cats did all these things. pretty neat. (i once knew a cat that would follow the enemies when playing Doom, and when the enemy moved off screen to the side the cat was sitting, the cat would swipe the air beside the screen. Just in case that Doom enemy decided to leave the confines of that monitor and materialize, that cool cat was ready!)
