I take it to a mechanic. No one wants me to work on cars. Including myself.

Then you'll end up like the guy in that Midas commercial: "They tried to sell you a converter when all you need is a gas cap"

Funny,
My VW's dash doesn't look anything like that.

The best way to help somebody keep their car running is to take their tools away.

I know, but it gets old.
Plus, VW's woes of reliability is largely due to the fact people buy them at the price of a Corolla, and treat them as such. They don't change the oil enough or use the wrong type, ignore service intervals, etc. etc. VW's are required to be Autobahn-able, and that requires more TLC than the average economy car. Every VW my family has had (and we have had quite a few over the years, from Golfs to Jettas to Passats) has been nothing short of dependable, because my dad and I always took great care of them.

Anything is reliable if you take care of it. VW's generally are not because people don't take care of them. So at least you get it.
