It's absurdly expensive in most of the European markets compared to BMW or the like. In some countries it costs almost 10k more than a 1 series.

Prediction:

Subaru drops the BRZ to focus any performance aspect on the WRX

Toyota ceases production of the current GT86 and switches to a turbo 1.6L I4 for their mid range car with about 275HP, a lower end model uses a NA version of the same engine in the new 86 that has about 160HP but the car is overall lighter than the 86 new (MR2 maybe). Finally a high end model is produced using a twin turbo V6 engine with RWD and about 400HP this is the new Supra

How badly informed is that BMW chap or he's just saying that to make room for expensive car for the rich. The sort of clientele which helps BMW's image.

According to this March 2012 report at autoblog, Toyota is selling 7 times more than its monthly sales target while Subaru is selling 5.6 times . Come to date and FRS and BRZ sales have seen constant rise. The folks at ft86club.com have the data here .

But the numbers are for the FR-S, not for the global GT86 or the Asian and Aussie 86.

Maybe people rather have a Subaru badge than a Toyota badge?

Doubt it, another British mag., Autocar I think, once said that the BRZ is not even sold in some EU markets, due limited production.

I didn't attach the link for Aussie numbers but they are damn good for the GT 86. Just did a light google for "GT 86 Sales Target".

CALLED. IT.

I have been saying since people snubbed the first couple competitor concepts like the 130R that the car will be in trouble unless some competition appears. The hype train brought the initial buyers to the dealers. Now what?

Unfortunately most people this side of the Atlantic have forgotten what rear wheel drive is.

The GM car has big chances to be produced, now that Mark has the product planning, and the Nissan IDx is all but confirmed.

Kinja'd!!!

Mazda RX-7 rumors just won't die, and let's not forget about Honda and Kia.

Of course that those VW bastards started killing the small sports car segment, when they invented the 'hot' hatchback, but Akio Toyoda could be just the motherfucker to save it, and he is whiling to do it, even if he will lose money.

Volkswagen didn't invent the hot hatch. There were hot hatches around a decade before the Golf GTI.

1. It's freakin' expensive for what it actully is in most EU countries.

2. In a country like Belgium, where your taxes and insurance depends on the power outpout, most people can't afford a car with 163hp. Hell, most people won't even get over 136hp !

Sooo, if you're able to afford it AND afford taxes and insurance for a 163+ hp car, why would you settle for a "cheap" car with "only" 200hp ?!

If they had some engines choices, maybe it would have worked better.

Its a nice car, but for a similar price I can have a (quick look on Autotrader for new cars) VW Scirocco GT, VW Golf GTi or GTD, Seat Leon FR, Ford Focus ST, Skoda Octavia VRS, BMW 1 Series hatch M Sport, Vauxhall Astra GTC VXR, Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDi S line. So many other cars that are sporty and also practical.

Yes I know two people who have a GT 86 (one of them has a Range Rover for more versatility), but they are single with no children and bought them for the fun and look of them.

It's not really about missing the point. The problem, as I see it anyway, consists of multiple reasons.

One: price. You can get a quicker, nicer, more practical and still RWD BMW 1-series for a similar amount of money.

Two: the badge. Toyotas have a poor image among people who aren't grandparents. Subarus are unicorns, good look finding a dealer.

Three: looks. This might just be me, but I simply don't like how it looks, and I detest the taillights. I'd still own one though. But the point remains. You can drive to a client with a BMW 1-series, you can't with a car with boy racer looks like the GT-86.

Four: taxes. The BMW 1 series I mentioned is more frugal while offering similar to better performance for the same price. In some countries this means the Toyota gets hit by higher CO2 emissions/fuel economy related taxes.

So I guess it really isn't strange at all it's not catching on. It should be way cheaper, it might stand a chance then.

That is due to my lack of money. Solve that and I'll take some of 'em GT86 s.

Looks are subjective.

But the 1-series is only slightly better looking than the X6 and 5 Series GT to me.
