So, I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed the huge gulf that exists between the "contemporary" JDM crowd and the "classic" JDM'ers. Sure, you get the same thing in other car cultures, but the gap between the two just seems so... evident.

Am I missing something?

Where does classic end and contemporary start? Personally I don't see it, in saying that, I'm not really part of the scene. Here in NZ there isn't really a separation at all, over here there's a big following of old rotorys, corollas and such, as well as all the contemporary stuff and it kinda blends together. Also where does the AE86 stand? everyone loves a nice 86

Really hard to say there is that huge gap when I'm in the classic part of that scene. We blend together nice and smooth because everyone loves a classic. Here in the Bay Area its all "respected" whether you're into todays or stick with the old school. There's always that certain someone to break the bridge though. A lot of opinions are bluntly said for contemporary. I'm curious, what scene do you side in?

I guess you could say I drive in the contemporary side with my Miata, but I love them both. I do love pretty much anything with wheels or an engine though...

I've never really noticed any gap between the two. Like bahlZakkcc said, everyone has respect for the classics.

I wish I could answer your questions but I can't as I was making a general observation based on my experience. A great example is in the fact that I've often seen the young guys with the more contemporary rides fawn over the classic JDM's though I almost never see anyone with a classic Japanese Sportscar demonstrate even the slightest interest in Jr's drift-tuned Sil80.

Neither. I prefer to be able to move between the two with ease because I am a Mustang guy. But there's a perfect example of the same attitude within a different culture of cars - the only guys who check out other "modern" Mustangs are the young guys or the guys who also own contemporary ponies. We go and look at their classic rides, and love it, but those old dudes with their GT350's and Mach 1's never take any interest in us, or our cars. Typically, anyway.
