... though I want one so badly that I'm going to put it into my five year plan, somewhere, it's up against a longstanding Such-Want contender.
I think a Kenmeri Skyline would be my first pick, but the thing is that I also really like the Hako cars...
... and would have a hard time picking between them because I'd be looking at modifying the car either way. Beside side draft Mikuni carbs, I'd be looking at a fully modern coil-over suspension set up and aggressive exhaust. I'm no stance-nation kind of guy, however; I have a pretty good idea of where I'd like the car to end up.
But Skylines are expensive and rare enough, even if you're willing to import a car. So, I start looking at other options.
Because the point is this: I want to feel the car, I want to live the drive. The sound of those carbs working, the raspy exhaust note, the smells of oil, of gas, of driving. I've played with the idea of other cars, here and there, but end up admitting to myself that these are the cars that really stir my soul.
Don't read me wrong - I love my Mustangs and would love to have a '71 Mach 1 to look at and listen to at idle, but for everything else? I love a Volkswagen and often dream that I'll one day own a Type 3 Squareback and, if I'm honest, it's still the strongest contender from outside Japan . And when it comes down to it, I'd have a hard call...
... but if I had the bank, I'd take both thanks.

I'm on the same page as you, brotha. I'm currently searching for a Z car. As soon as a decent one pops up in my area, I'm saying goodbye to the Baja Bug and getting it.

Tons, but I want to dream higher, even if the reality is somewhat more realistic.
I like the Z cars a lot, looked at a very nice Fairlady the other day just for giggles and shits and there's no question that a 510 (particularly in wagon form) would make me a happy man.
Buuuut, if I could make it happen? A Bluebird would be a great 510 without being a straight-up 510 guy though, sadly, the Z's stay pretty low on my list but they're still contenders.

I see nice Z cars come and go up here. They sold well in Canada, those that were offered, and here on the West Coast we have a climate which is very kind to cars so they tend to last, even those in states of disrepair.
But they're just not exactly to my taste. I need more 3-box, you know?

I had an RX3 in Fourza Motorsport which I absolutely loved. And then I saw the prices they command in real life and immediately thought, "The purchase price, combined with the oil bill, will straight up kill me."

Haha ya I gotcha. You're lucky to have a good, car preserving climate out there. Here in St. Louis we get road-salty winters and humid summers so that makes for many rusty cars unfortunately. Hopefully some day we will both own some 70's Japanese cars!

I love seeing another Classic JDM Opponaut. I guess my question is answered from my previous comment on your other post. But honestly, I see how you feel about S30's. I own one and a couple of Oppos here as well. Thing is, both the Bluebird and S30, are getting more rarer than ever since there's another one coming. Keep searching for some, but aim where its realistic lol. I'm with you on that dream though. Another question, what part of the west coast are you from? Check out these others:

1st Gen Celicas (Both liftback and coupe TA-RA)
1st Gen Cressidas
Datsun (All 10's, Pulsars, Violets, Sunnys, Bluebirds) Since you want the Kenmeri, check out the 610 since its closely resembled with it. Violets (710) are also somewhat popular/rare in Japan. The Sunny truck B120 for a sick hako front end is probably something you'd like too. Also the B110 sunny is something I suggest.

Lol $20,000 will get you a pretty fantastic car, theres a $13,000 car around here, they have to be cheaper than the skylines, no?

Actually, yes. You have, or I do, a much better chance finding a local market RX3 than an imported C110 but I have to first admit that I don't love Wankles and for the price, locally, it wouldn't be my first choice - I'd look at a 510, for example.
I like the car, a lot. It looks great, I've heard wonderful things about how they drive but it's just not a top level groin stirrer for me, personally.
