Check it out. It's literally a tank tread with different attachments.

French Canadians invented the modern caterpillar tracked snowmobile, so it fits that one of them would come with something crazy like this. Crazy like a fox, that is.

Back in my day we called 'em Diablo Rouges (best name ever)
![]() 02/18/2014 at 23:20 |

The snow plow feature is pretty cool, but otherwise it's just a front wheel drive snow mobile.

Can we get some for the guys at Top Gear to test out?

1. torque steer.
2. FWD.
![]() 02/18/2014 at 23:37 |

![]() 02/18/2014 at 23:37 |

I have absolutly no use for this at all.............. I want two of them though..
![]() 02/18/2014 at 23:46 |

only difference is that this is multi-purpose, can achieve many tasks on a small piece of acreage, whereas the segway was for rich people and mall cops who cant run.
- look up segways for vets, the only good thing that has come out of segways
![]() 02/18/2014 at 23:59 |
|
So you're saying the future of transportation design in the backyard is going to explode because of this thing? I don't think so, sorry :) It's just another tool, that's all.
The segway was touted as the biggest thing in urban development since the street drain, and we're still waiting for that future to materialize...

At first I was skeptical, but the music in that video really brought it all together.

Yes! I can't figure out if it's bad 80's porn music, or from a video game or from an infomercial selling swampland...

Yea but you are going to just spray snow into your face and into whatever you are pulling.

It's probably modern synthwave. Examples include artists such as Lazerhawk, Sellorekt, Mitch Murder, and Miami Nights 1984 to name a few.
This stuff forms most of my cruising playlist.

The fully-enclosed design on this does make a difference. It means the track is larger, while the vehicle overall is smaller. And quiet enough to keep the neighbors from complaining.

"...looks a lot like a potential future for transportation design."

![]() 02/19/2014 at 00:55 |

This just seems like a primitive prelude to the snow mobile. It reminds me of the Segway, "Extremely, extremely practical", "The future of transportation" Yeah right, it's a useless gimmick.

jet ski in the snow? sign me up!!!
![]() 02/19/2014 at 01:15 |

Can I g3t a rear-drive version? Not to downplay the awesomeness of the thing-I definitely want one-but I'd rather my drivetrain push me than pull me. It's a steering thing.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 01:45 |

"the future"? it looks more like a Gravely lawnmower from 45 years ago.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 07:16 |

This thing has LAW SUITS written all over it. Exposed track? Gonna have some issues. Essentially it is nothing more than an electric sled with a different configuration.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 07:41 |
|
That's absolutely awesome. A horse for the 21st century. This opens countless possibilities.
Wannabee farmers could use those to plough their fields, it could be used by people who own large estates to haul stuff around, possibilities are just endless!
The only real question is: how much? At 1500$, it makes a lot of sense. At 10 000$, it doesn't.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 07:49 |
|
So what really is the advantage of this thing over a regular snowmobile with a trailer hitch?
![]() 02/19/2014 at 07:49 |
|
Oh Miami Nights 1984, nice!
I should also mention Futurecop!, Kavinsky and Volta Cab :)

Heh, I like the clip at 2:12 where he's trimming the forest. "Wup! Forest is getting a little shaggy!"

great fine
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:10 |
|
Ah you beat me to it, I just found the same design. This new thing might be modern and electric but not super innovative. Not to metnion in order to sell this as a consumer product it wouldnt look nearly as cool because the lawyers would have you install guards all over that track for safety. My bet is it would end up looking very similar to the old design.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:13 |
|
Yes but the best way to get airborne is to ride on top of it, so youll need the skis to be in front and then you might as well put a seat on it too.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:26 |
|
They would hate it, number one problem it was invented in Canada and they would not be able to find it on a map and the fact it is electric would make them foam at the mouth and squeal like little girls. They hate anything "electric".
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:30 |

I like it even though the video tells you that you look like a pussy at the controls (4:18).

How much torque does it make? This sounds like a practical thing to just keep in your truck bed, at least during the winter.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:42 |

Sounds a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog music to me.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 08:53 |

Just add a cow-catcher. That'll make it safe...
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:00 |

Come on, this can't be any where near $1500. The electrics alone are probably that alone, it going to need some high amperage motor controllers to handle that kind of power. Brammo and Zero electric motorcycles are no where near $1500.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:23 |
|
LOL
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:25 |
|
HEY lets make it about 1000x more practical and fun and what the heck how about give it a motor that can go 100 mph and never need to charge:
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:34 |
|
I am not sure you understand how this thing steers.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:36 |

I know that this was posted 14 hours ago, so its ancient news, but tell me if you like it!
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:40 |

As neat as this thing is, I just don't see it being successful in the near future with an electrical powertrain. The state of the art for such things, Esp battery power density, still needs much more development. Electric powertrains still have not reached parity in cost for a given level of power, range and weight.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:47 |
|
This doesn't require very small motors and batteries like motorcycles do, and it has a high volume potential so there might be some hope of it being cheap.
Now quite frankly, I don't think this'll be 1500$. I was saying that at 1500$, it was very interesting. I don't see this selling for under 4 000$.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:51 |

Honey, I NEED this...
![]() 02/19/2014 at 09:58 |

You can, it's called a snowmobile.

![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:31 |

As awesome as this looks, I'd rather live in an area that doesn't get enough snow to make this worth having.

You're most welcome.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:36 |

It looks like something that detached from Batman's snowcat after it got buried in an avalanche by Mr. Freeze.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:40 |

So it's a snowmobile but backwards.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:44 |

Batteries, in a cold, remote environment... nope, don't see a problem with that at all. After all, all you have to do to recharge is find one of those recharging trees they have in the national forest

y'all thought I was kidding, didntcha?
![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:46 |

Yes. It's called a snowmobile.

Miami nights 1984.
That just sounds like a pile of cocaine and a lot of bikinis pulled up far over the hips. Dear lord.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 10:58 |

Basically
![]() 02/19/2014 at 11:01 |
|
All that thing needs is this..
809cc Rotax Triple, 180 hp stock, very compact and light for power output, that track would be laying rubber on concrete with one of these bad boys dropped in..
![]() 02/19/2014 at 11:03 |

This looks like a fabulous tool for the developing world, and a fun toy. But I can't see this taking off moreso than motorcycles, despite the functionality. People love their CUVs for their cavernous, empty cargo areas, unnecessarily high seating position, and misplaced sense of safety and security.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 11:09 |
|
Looks like this is where Boston Dynamics should have gone from a design point instead of trying to put legs on robotic drones. Fewer moving parts, probably quieter, probably more stable (unmanned) if the track length were shortened a bit.
I'd like to see a pack robot drone for troop support based on this.
