I just had the brakes on my '03 Odyssey serviced at a national brake chain. Coming home, I noticed that when I first apply the brakes, there is a long pedal travel and mushy braking, while subsequent applications of the pedal get the pressure up and the van brakes normally. Did these guys screw something up? Not bleed them properly?

Sound's like there is still air in the lines. So yes they those guys did screw up.

Sounds like improper bleeding, or no bleed check at all.

Agree with the other two. Take it back and have them re-bleed the brakes. They shouldn't have let you take it home like that.

I'm going with 'yes'. Sounds like they didn't bleed them properly.

Hold on guys.
Define "serviced". If they flushed the brake fluid then yeah, it probably is a bad bleed.
If they just did rotors and pads they shouldn't have broken the bleed. If the long pedal and mushy braking happened at the very first application of the pedal driving the car away from the shop and no other times afterward, it could be the recently depressed pistons coming out of the bore and indexing the pads to the rotor surface. That's pretty much normal. If the brakes pumped up more than one time in total something is wrong. Check your fluid level, too.

First time was definitely the worst, but it's still happening. The repair was turning the rotor and rebuilding the caliper.

Did they bleed the brakes?
Ask them to do a full fluid flush since that can prolong caliper life

Call them right away and take it back immediately. It is not safe to drive.

Already took it back. They bled the brakes again, and even though the guy said that "no air came out" the brakes are right now. I wonder how many other folks they send away with bad brakes who don't realize there's a problem. I won't be going back.
