Today, I bought a new Canon Rebel T3i, and a new 50 mm f/1.8 focal lens (yeah, yeah, it's cheap, whatever) to go along with it. Best Buy matched their own website and I scored the camera for $100 bucks off. So, instead of finishing something productive, I spent the entire day screwing around with my new camera.
Now I offer you a 1:18 scale version of the Hummer H3T concept. Enjoy. I'll have something you may or may not read up tomorrow.
(Also, Louisville Auto Show, you will be my bitch. And you will be faithful.)

That camera is awesome. Get magic lantern and it will utterly transform it into a very capable performer.
As far as your picture, lower the aperture to make the depth of field a bit wider to include more of the car. You'll still get that blurred background effect, but you'll have more of the subject in focus. That 50mm is the best bang for the buck you can get at that price point.

I love that 50mm 1.8. I don't care how cheap it feels, the good copies take nice shots. Plus, it's all I've got because it's all I could afford.

The fact I snagged it for the same price as the Nikon D3200 makes it even more awesome.
The Nikon had more megapixels and blah, blah, but the Canon is much more user friendly at the end of the day. And that's what a n00b like myself needs. With that said, thanks for the tip. ;-)
Magic Lantern also seems pretty neat. When I feel comfortable with the T3i, I'll likely install it.
The Canon is also easier to shoot short films with, from what I understand. I'm real eager to see how that turns out.

It's all I could afford, too. But I'm pleased with it so far. Then again, this is coming from a guy who had to use an old PowerShot point and shoot.

My camera is a Rebel XT. I'm surprised it's lasted me the seven years I've had it.

I used to buy and sell cameras, and the T3i is much more stout than the D3200, even though the low light performance on the Nikon was probably marginally better than the t3i. User-friendly is about the same on both, but for some reason, I always like the Canons better. Their entry level cameras felt so much better and capable.
The t3i can take great looking pictures and videos. Although not automotive related, here's a few I took with my t4i (same sensor as t3i) when I went to Europe last summer. I have a 28-135mm, 50mm 1.8, and 10-20mm lens.

Seven years? Nice. I hope I can get at least a good five years out of the T3i before I replace it.

The nifty fifty. I love that lens. My uncle is a really crazy good pro photographer, and he still packs one of those cheapos on every one of his shoots. He says he just loves it, and he doesn't care what anyone thinks because his photos will look better.

I would think you could, unless you subject it to some terrible conditions. Although I have done that to my XT. I really planned on replacing it before now...

That is something I noticed when I held both the D3200 and the T3i; the Canon felt better built.
Pardon my French, but those photos gave me a chubby. What I mean to say is, they're all gorgeous shots.
I should probably ask you what lens I should invest in next? I have the 18-35mm the T3i came with and the 1.8 50mm. A wide shot lens, maybe?

You should get rid of the 18-55 kit lens. It's slow and the optics are garbage. It's good for point and shoot but not much else. The best thing you can spend money on is a good lens, so I would suggest a good portrait lens, like you already have, a good wide angle lens, like my Sigma 10-20mm, and a decent telephoto zoom lens. I have a 28-135 3.5-5.6, which is OK, but I'm looking to get the Canon 24-70 2.8 L and 70-200 2.8 L. Those lenses are the TITS.
And thanks for the compliments on the pictures. I'm just starting out and trying to do things right. There's still a lot of room for improvement, and I'm a complete noob at editing. On an unrelated note, how can I reach you? I wanted to run a few things by you if you have a second to chat.

Awesome advice on the lenses. Thank you!
