and then proceed to walk themselves into the store appearing to be perfectly healthy or do you do you give them grace that they might be inflicted with a condition that is not visible?

First I look whether or not they have a handicap sticker. If they do and can walk I don't judge. If they don't and can or can't walk then I call them a scumbag behind their back and go on as usual about my business.

As long as they have a handicap placard/license plate, I am in no position to question them using the spot.

But every one of those able-bodied f*ckers without the placards/plates gets the following question: Are you physically handicapped or mentally handicapped?

My father and my in-laws all have handicap placards for good reason. Huge pet peeve of mine when someone parks in a spot just because they're running in real quick to grab something.

It depends on the time of year, the kind of car, and the state of the plate, and the presence or absence of a handicap plate or placard.

If it's a New Yorker in a BMW, then they're probably not handicapped—well, at least physically. Wait, does mental handicap qualify for the special spaces? Carry on...

Only if they do it while handicapped people, make handicapped faces.

Then they're an asshole-eoeo-eoeo-eoeo.

Definitely this. I only judge if they park in a spot and don't have a sticker. If they can walk and have a sticker, you never know if it's for a passenger in the vehicle or some other circumstance like that.

What really grinds my gears is that around here all the fire lanes in front of stores are choked with cars whose owners are too lazy to find a spot (the lots are never full, as a rule).

If there is a sticker or marked license plate, I wonder sometimes. I know of a few people who have gotten the tags for the wrong reasons. "I have it for when I give my father a ride, but I can use it anytime!" <- Waste of human tissue.

But, generally I don't care. Hopefully its an honest person with an unseen disease. My grandfather had one in his 70's. He appeared to walk fine, but it drained him and he was a stroke survivor. So you never know.

I have also been to some places where the parking lot is medium full, but there are a dozen empty handicapped spaces. In those times I have wondered "why not" but don't.

I also caught my wife park in one once, she got yelled at some. To my knowledge she has not done it again.

I don't like the fact handicapped spaces exist.

The biggest offenders are care takers who have the sticker for when they're transporting their patient, but who use it all of the time. I would wager that's most often what you're seeing, but the one time you confront them about it you'll be wrong.

I give them the benefit of the doubt that they might have a legit condition. But if they are able to walk just fine, then I question why they can't walk just fine a little further from the door.

I don't generally care if other people break the rules, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody. In this case, as long as there are a couple other handicap spaces available for those who need them, it's none of my business. In the same vein, I think it's generally assholery when people park across the line and take up two spaces, but it only bothers me if the parking lot in question is crowded.

I often park in them when I take my 95% blind friend to get stuff. But we take his placard which hangs from the mirror.

Related story. We were in a restaurant and when we got up to leave, there was a table with about 10-12 cops we had to walk past. My friend is tapping away with his white cane while he has a hand on my shoulder. I say "Danny, go with me on this". I stop by their table and hand him the keys and say "Here, Danny, you drive. I had 3 beers". Yep, they all looked and 2 followed us to the door. (And no, I had not drank anything).

Timely post.

I have seen non-handicapped drivers (meaning no special tags or cards) take handicapped spots for years. Always rubbed me the wrong way, but I figured there's plenty of other wrongs I can try righting without getting into it with a stranger.

Several days ago I was getting gas at a local Chevron when a late model Camaro pulled into the only handicapped spot in front of the place, despite the two spots on either side of him being unoccupied. Window-rattling bass and cap turned backwards, the guy was acting the stereotypical douche. A pretty young lady got out of the car and went in.

I finished up at the pump, and could not help myself as I was going past his car to get my receipt from the store. I stopped at the drivers window and pointed at the handicapped sign that was plainly visible on a post in front of the spot. He turned down his music and slid the window down and said "What?" I looked at him and said "Mentally handicapped?"

He shrugged, said he was sorry, and backed the car up and pulled into one of the vacant spots while I went on inside the store.

Now to his credit, he could have just as easily said "Fuck you." or even pulled a weapon, but he didn't. I doubt seriously though that I will ever take anyone else to task for parking in a handicapped spot.

Illinois just "reformed" its handicap/disabled system. "Reformed" means added new placard types to indicate whether you can/can't feed a meter, since before if you had one of the 600,000 disabled placards or 85,000 handicap plates, you parked free, and Chicago was mad about how much more money it wasn't taking.

Nothing done to address the fact that, in a state of 12 M, with 8 M drivers, 8.5% apparently qualify for special legal status...
