Well i picked up the BMW today. It was a little rougher than i had been led to believe which got me another $3oo off the price. There is nasty rust along the lower edges of the sills and fenders, a big crack in the windsheild and the sunroof is borked.

But the most entertaining flaw was the cars inability to idle. if you pushed the clutch in at a light it would just die. so i sat through every red light holding 3,000 through a rusted out exhaust blowing everyone away. Well i just orderd $100 worth of vaccum hoses so hopefully i can get that issue taken care of before finding someone to tackle the rust.

Do those things have idle stabilizer valves?

yea its a plunger lookin diaphragm that controls idle speed when the butterfly vqlve n the throttle is closed. they tend to get gummed up from oil and carbon, not to mention old cracked hoses causing vaccum leaks.

Yeah your issues sound like my Audi 200 when I got it. The ISV was starting to go and the symptoms were it wouldn't return to idle after revving past 3k or so. You had to ease it back down or it would stall. The vacuum lines weren't much better but the ISV replacement fixed that problem immediately.

Don't worry. A rusty e30 is still a good e30. One of my e30s was such a rust bucket when I got it that I couldn't get the lug nuts off, even using a shops air tools. I had to use an ox-acetelyne torch, , a.k.a. the blue wrench, to loosen them up. Then, the exhaust broke in half when I was taking it off. At the time, I was going to do a rear main seal repair, not an exhaust mod, but plans change quickly when you buy a half-dead car from Connecticut. However, years later, the car is still here, stronger than ever.

Honestly, no idea. Body work is usually pretty expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if it cost somewhere around $1000, unfortunately. However, my solution was much more cost effective (if not as well done or pretty). I ripped out most of the interior myself, cut out the biggest rust spots and welded in new metal or used fiberglass sheets. It's not the best, but it works. Still doing fine, years later. I do have the advantage of having been a mechanic, though (not a body tech).
