Do you patronize products that sponsor your sport?

So the irony goes, I run a business built on promoting companies, yet I feel like I am nearly immune to advertising. I never bought an album because of a promotion, I never pulled off the interstate because I saw a billboard. I flatly ignore online ads, sometimes to my own peril like missing limited opportunities, but advertising (ignore my job description) just isn't ME.

So I was commenting with Turbeaux505 this morning that when it was time to buy supplies for a party, I looked down, saw two hunormous bottles of Martini vermouth and decided, oh screw it, I've fallen for those stripes.

Overlookdx countered that he bought a bottle of Martini champagne and it was so undrinkable, he went back to the store (the vermouth ain't lousy, BTW). So we have a plus side and a minus side for buying a product from a company that has been reliably pumping money into motorsports for decades.

Do you ever spend you money based on sponsors you see racing by live or on TV? Did it work out for you, or not?

In the rare instances that I encounter a Gulf station in this part of the country, you better goddamn believe I stop there. Dat livery.

Ill just drop the picture that sort of kicked this off right here.

Being a total car nut and a motorsports fan I say yes. Except for Red Bull. That stuff is just nasty

I don't "buy" Martini & Rossi vermouth but I "bought" it. Reason being, if you make your martinis correctly, a single bottle of the stuff lasts a lifetime.

I tried Sun Drop because I saw it on RHR's Indy Car. I didn't feel good after trying Sun Drop. (I don't drink Mountain Dew)

*immune to corporate advertising

Not all forms of advertising have a manufacturer's name on it. I'd say it's a trope now that no one believes they are "affected" by advertisement just because they don't have immediate reactions to ads they see.

If working for said company counts as patronizing, then yes.

Yes, but this is a lifelong feeling. I'm also fairly loyal (Samsung, Subaru, Trader Joes) but at the same time I'm not a hardcore CONSUMER like so many people I know. This was at least the first I thought about the purchase as a patronage.

You have to unseal it for oxidization to happen. I merely pass the bottle over the top of the shaker without pouring ;)

I think that most purchase decisions come from all of the media and fiction that we see as we grow up, as well as what emotions we associate with them. Advertising is just a way of re-igniting these experiences temporarily hoping that they will click. Like Ferrari using the Testarosssa or 288 GTO in a video to sell new Ferrari's to children born in the mid-70s.

Liverpool FC might have made me buy more Carlsberg.

Kinja'd!!!

I've also had my fair share of Jägermeister, but I don't think the racing ever made any effect there.

Kinja'd!!!

But nothing from Martini or anyone else. I think I'm quite objective to advertising, and I have no problems chosing stuff myself.

I go to Lowes because of JJ. Same thing as Home Depot, so it's not like I'm sacrificing. Gotta support the hometown boys.

I also don't buy M&Ms anymore because of Krashy Kyle.

I will try a product, all things being equal, because the company sponsors something that I am interested in. I wish that interest to continue. It's that simple. I will not buy something just because of the sponsorship. I like the 24 Hours of Daytona, but I don't own a Rolex, etc.

Whenever I see 'Liverpool' I think of James May asking the old man where the 'Liver' building is. The what? The Liver building. Liver building? Yes, the Liver building. You mean the Lyver building? .... Why do they not call it Lyverpool?

Probably related. Then again, I love the way my FXT drives. I went the the dealer expecting to buy a Dodge Nitro. I left in a 3 year old FXT because it's a great piece of kit. I'm sure Richard Burns had something to do with it, but again, not conscious like I did the mixers.

Can't do 'energy' drinks in any form. It's sad that in the last few years at 100AW, the forst was FILLED with black and neon green. Then last year, Ken crashed out on Friday and by Saturday there so no lime green to be found. They weren't RALLY fans, they were KEN fans.

The best marketing is the kind that makes you want something without realizing why. You know racing is marketing for car companies. With the exception of Audi and maybe Toyota and Porsche, which use racing to test new technology, racing is purely marketing. You know Subaru makes rally cars. All their cars are awd with boxer engines. You get in one hoping, expecting to get some race car feeling. That's the best marketing.

I spent a while seeking out Shell stations after I saw this advert.

I also respond well to a really good advert. If a really clever or well done advert impresses me, and I'm in an opportunity to purchase said product over a competitor, I will 'reward' the good advertising department.

Best example I can think of is this Guinness ad. It definitely persuaded me to drink Guinness rather than ale for a good amount of time. Truly excellent advert.

Similarly, I will flat-out refuse to buy a product that has a boring or obnoxious advert.

Can you believe a FXT 5-speed with Cobb exhaust, heated leather seats and largest sunroof in automotive history and it's a 'company car.' I was supposed to go buy something American and reliable if possible. I came home with something $2K cheaper and so so so much more fun.

Sti rear bar. Accessport, brake lines, all good things no one can see. I had to resist the coilovers which are usually colors that are not subtle.

I've pulled off the highway due to a billboard. It was for Iowa 80, the largest truck stop in the world. Suffice to say, it was well worth it.

Yes, but only to a point. I'm not likely to seek out a product just because of a sponsorship.

For instance, as much as I love the Martini livery, it's not going to turn me into a vermouth drinker. However, if I were to buy vermouth, of course I'd buy Martini brand. And as much as I adore virtually every tobacco livery, I've never smoked more than one or two darts in my lifetime.

When I buy motor oil, I feel that no major brand is any better than another, and since prices are very close, I choose Castrol simply because of their racing sponsorships and cool livery.

And just today, I was shopping for some premium beer as a treat. I picked up Fuller's London Pride, just because I'd seen James May promoting it*. Years ago, I tried Warsteiner for a similar reason, because I saw their name on race cars.

* He was their spokesperson from 2010-2012 or so. Where did the time go?

I've been on Tide since I watched NASCAR as a kid. When I have no personal solid opinion about a given product.. I usually grab whatever I've seen on a racecar. Because Racecar!
