Seriously, one of the most under-appreciated, overlooked animes to ever be aired in the U.S.

Excellent voice acting on the English dub, smooth, consistent animation, an interesting setting, intricate storyline, and memorable characters and relationships.

One of those shows that was 'ok' as a youngster, but becomes fantastic when you watch it again as an adult.

I can't see any animated anything ending in "star" without thinking of BraveStarr, because I grew up in the 80s and there are few cartoons more 80s in my mind than BraveStarr.

If you didn't grow up in the 80s and don't know what BraveStarr is, it's a Filmation cartoon about a magical native American US Marshall in space with a robot horse who could turn into a gun who would fight a zombie cowboy to bring the law to some magical planet inhabited by humanoid prairie dogs.

Basically, what I'm saying is if you didn't grow up in the 80s, your cartoons sucked.

Have I had this conversation with you before, over on Kotaku? I think I did.

About Outlaw Star? I don't know...I remember having a similar discussion about Trigun, even though Outlaw Star's voice acting is better and the animation is more consistent.

I might be thinking of somebody else. I thought it was you, because your name is familiar. Anyway, I guess I'll just state my opinions on the show.

I actually enjoyed the show, but I thought certain elements let it down. Namely, I thought the Grappler-ship concept was dopey and was undermined by the cartoon's own physics. I also wasn't a fan of the cliché anime comedy relief techniques (distorted faces, obnoxious female klutz character, etc.).

Otherwise, a solid anime, definitely worth watching. The magic Caster gun was an interesting concept, one that I really liked.

I've maintained an unabashed boner for Ashia Clan Clan since highschool. Especially her possibly maybe furry boobies in the unedited hot springs episode, dont care. Even in beast mode-Slightly stranger boner.

Kinja'd!!!

Was just a very smartly made space epic with well woven mysticism and mystery. Never a boring episode. My geneticist pre-doc friend from Cornell and I bonded over this series

30-30 says Fuck yeah!... and the planet was New Texas. Only now do I appreciate he was named after a lever action cowboy gun, er gun calibler. Pretty sure he was my first action figure ever.

Old person high five.

Also, if you haven't read the webcomic The Trenches, you really should. It's a collaboration between the guys behind Penny Arcade and PvP, and it's about the QA testers working on an overbudget game adaptation of an 80s cartoon called LawStar, which is more or less a version of BraveStarr used as a parody of awful yet wonderful 80s toy commercials masquerading as children's entertainment.

You can read it here: http://trenchescomic.com/

Also, the very first panel is a guy sitting in a Tesla Roadster.

This was a great show! It was similar in tone to Cowboy Bebop, but more fun, and less "pretentious." Not that Cowboy Bebop is bad, its just...sometimes you want to see ships fighting and guns and seedy bars and jobs gone wrong!

"Pagua Sonfa" will forever be etched into my memory. Oh, and, "What is thy desire?"

I just rewatched Outlaw Star this past week. Hadn't watched it in a few years, but just an astounding show. Except that dragonite episode with the giant crabs. I can't stand that one for some reason.

This anime profoundly impacted my circle of friends and our rpgs (pencil & paper). We've incorporated caster guns into our campaigns (D&D 3.0/3.5, more recently Pathfinder) because the concept is just so cool.

I LOVE Pathfinder! I am so distressed that I can't find anybody to GM a campaign near me. And when I do, I must present the caster guns idea- it would actually work quite well.

We make caster guns exotic weapons which are very rare, and the shells are basically scrolls scribed onto metal cartridges. The gun is basically a device which 'reads' the scroll, casting the spell and projecting the spell's effect to where it's aimed. Very cool addition to our games.

That's genius! I love it! :-)

I've often been the guy who either uses really strange class/race combinations or has to get with the GM to make a custom class arrangement. My last major campaign that I was in, I ran a half-orc Inquisitor who used a spiked buckler and a cold iron morningstar for melee combat, alongside an ironwood quarterstaff sometimes, and a crossbrow for ranged combat. He was an effective character and was definitely an asset to the team, but two lucky loot rolls resulted in him being incredibly overpowered by level 10.

The first roll I wound up getting a +2 Giant-Hide Armor set from a stone giant, which when combined with my morningstar and certain Inquisitor skills, resulted in a massive tank of a fighter who could wipe out a horde of lower-and-middle class enemies in no time and go toe-to-toe with nearly any boss thrown at him. Still, he wasn't invincible.

No, the invincibility came when I rolled for loot from a chest and got a Wondrous Cubic Gate. This utterly broke the game once I learned how to properly use it. The first time this became apparent was when we were facing against an abyssal boss creature (I forget the exact kind) that was capable of flying. After it was clear we were out of our league, I asked our mage to throw everything he had at a paralyzing spell on just its wings. As soon as it began to fall, I used the Cubic Gate to open a portal underneath it into Elysium and closed the gate as soon as it fell through.

The inhabitants of Elysium made short work of the boss, and since it was our actions that lead to its death, we got the XP for the kill. Pretty soon, major fights became "Hold it off while I teleport it into a realm opposite its own alignment." The GM was none too pleased about this and constantly tried to create scenarios where the Gate would get lost or broken or stolen. When the campaign ended because of people relocating, my character still possessed it haha.

Next campaign I get into, I really need to talk to the GM so we can custom-make the Viking Brothers characters I drew up- A Viking monk and a Viking necromancer.
