If Toyota and BMW !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and Toyota will do the Supra alone and with the possibility of the sub $20.000 Toyota sports car to be based on the Z4. There are only two possibilities, really.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

1. Lexus will get a two seats roadster.

or

2. The next 86 will be based on this new platform, with Subaru getting the middle finger, from Toyota.

From what I've heard Subaru is looking to drop out of producing the BRZ in the next couple of years. They only wanted to do a limited production run before getting back to just AWD cars.

Nope, the MR2/MRS were mid engine, the BMW Z4 isn't, and never will be.

Sub 20,000K car, based on the platform that BMW uses for Z4? Not freakin' likely, or else Z4 will be seriously under-equipped for competing with Porsche 981 Boxster and Cayman. The platform has to be suited for it, and that doesn't come at a cost that can be built under $20K.

A new Lexus SC is probably more likely.

A new MR2 would be better suited by moving FR-S's boxer engine to a place behind the driver, and using a 2WD version of Subaru's transaxle to drive the rear wheels, like a Subaru-built half-priced Cayman/Boxster with 4 cylinders rather than 6.

A RWD performance car under 20K would dilute the demand for FRS, and splinter the same buyer pool on two models that aren't that far apart in purpose...

It would be better to just de-content the FR-S and sell it a few thousand cheaper, once the platform R&D is paid for at it's current price point.

Supra is more likely to be based on the new weird-looking Lexus coupe, with less interior luxury, Toyota aesthetics, and a harder performance edge.

Their loss. Toyota only used subaru to lower prices since Toyota could have spent some money and developed their own 2.0 NA engine that made 200 hp. Honestly, subaru came along for one hell of a free ride.

I don't see it being a Lexus, given that's a direct competitor. A new Supra could go with a Z4. Z4 cost ~$60-70k and based on their latest concept I could see the Supra being $40-50k.
