"The UK is among those countries where jaywalking is not an offence. But the rate of pedestrian deaths is half that of the US, at 0.736 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011 compared to 1.422 per 100,000 in America.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! And specifically mentions the enforcement foolishness in LA and in NYC.

I still think the majority of pedestrians hit in NY are tourists because Jesus Christ they are completely oblivious to their immediate surroundings. To busy staring up and randomly stopping in the middle of the side walk (blocking everyone trying to get to work) taking pictures. Bloody tourists...

Keep in mind that the US has a considerably larger population than the UK

Mayhap, since it is illegal, people rush and are more careless when jaywalking in the U.S.

Probably more to do with better driver training.

The figures quoted are per 100,000 inhabitants, not total...so population size is not a factor. And remember that Britian has a rather high population density as a whole and tend to walk more than we do.

If jaywalking is not an offence, it means oncoming traffic must pay more attention, as it'd be their fault if something happens. Also, since it's legally not wrong, jaywalkers probably do less stupid things because it's normal.

Just a theory.

It still is considering we have more and larger cities than the UK.

And yet 4/5 pedestrian deaths in the US are from people Jay-walking according to the NHTSA (usually at night, in clear conditions, with alcohol involved by either the driver or pedestrian)

Yes. So ticketing sober people in broad daylight is an effective strategy...mostly at raising revenue.

You can't really even start to say that there is causation here. There are so many other factors. You could say that speaking with a British accent makes you a safer pedestrian, and be just as correct.
