I looked at the F550 over the weekend, and while I like it the wife doesn't like the idea of the "main driver" being a 14-year-old Ferrari. And with only 2 seats. I hate to admit she kind of has a point.
At the risk of going totally off the reservation, does anyone have experience with the F1 transmission that Maserati put in the first several hundred GTS cars in 2009?

You were going to DD this thing? o_O

awesome cupholders

There is nothing wrong with that. Supposedly there are a few people on Ferrari forums where their only car is a 550.

At least Mr. Belfort could just live on the boat and walk to work when his car broke down.

My parents had a Corvette that was the summer DD for them and it was very impractical. Enough room for a couple small bags of clothes and that's about it. They traded it in on 4 door Caddy and were never happier.

I've heard it was jerky driving around town and parking, but worked well when you didn't have to shift.

Which Corvette? Supposedly the C5 and up are much better DD material

the C5 trunk is HUGE.

It was the 2009 model only, and I'm pretty sure they only shipped 239 F1 'boxes to the US. So if you can find one, buy it.

It was a C4, pretty basic corvette. Truck was wide but very flat.

... I'm sorry. You were saying about an F1 gearbox? Please continue..
... sorry. I lost you again. Something to do with my 5.5 liter V12, I'm afraid. It sounds too damn great.

Did you see the weird one-off convertible on BAT?

There's a guy down the street from me that DD's his F550.

Yep. Though it's probably the least tempting 456 one-off.
The sedan and wagon are much awesome-er.
Especially the wagon:

No kidding! The wagon is awesome.
I like the 456, but in my view in terms of looks it doesn't come close to the Maser GTS. And the Ferrari derived V8 in the Maser sounds like Thor tearing giants in half. Not that the V12 in the 456 sounds bad at all - I originally went to look at an F550 but my wife is dead set against F-cars.

I thought you were talking about the Quattroporte, which had a trim level called GTS, and which seemed like quite a step back from the 550M.
The Gran Turismo is indeed absolutely stunning to look at. And sounds.... well like you described! I did a bit of google-ing and realized that most GT's were fitted with ZF's 6HP, which is a great gearbox. I had always thought they were nearly all fitted with the Ferrari-sourced single clutch automated manual, which I haven't read a lot of good about.
I'm thinking of manual exotics under 100k$ -which I assume is your budget- that aren't Ferrari and are rather recent, but apart from a 911 or ( stupid idea alert ) a Z8, there's not much I can think of. 8C's are too rare and expensive, Jag's and Bentley are auto-only, Mercedes has nothing exciting and apart from a Corvette I can't see many American options.
If I had that kind of budget I'd be stupid enough to consider massively undercutting the budget and going for a Z4M, but that's because it's a car that makes me smile!

Nothing stupid about a Z8 - I love those, but my wife is fixated on having 4 seats.
When I went to look at the F550, right on the showroom floor was the only 8C I have ever seen in real life. Same engine as the Maserati GTS (didn't know that), very similar everywhere else. About 5x as expensive. But I agree, one of the few exotics that are way better looking. (Also F1 only I believe.)
