Been awhile, oppo! Got stuck in a lane on the way home and one of the lovely new potholes from the neverending winter put a gash in my tire.
The pothole cut a line in the tire right where it's pictured where the paint came off the wheel. I can't find anything online on whether or not it can be patched, could just be my lacking google-fu. I'm assuming my best bet is to take it to a tire shop, but maybe one of you has some insight for me.
Disclaimer: I don't know shit about tires and I have been in one hell of a rough spot the past 2 moths so I don't have the ~$280 for a new one + mount and balance.
Also, if someone who doesn't know what I drive can guess what the wheel and tire are from, +50 internets. Tires are from factory.

Looks superficial, is it leaking? For reference, tire sidewalls can NEVER be properly patched

It's flat now and won't hold air. The part that got the gash under the sidewall, on the part where it sits on the bead I'd guess? Not sure what that part's called or how to accurately describe it.

If it isn't leaking and the cords aren't cut don't worry about it - it is merely superficial. If it is leaking, then no, it can not be patched.

280 bucks for a tire? I know Hankook V12s are like 100 dollars per tire in 245/40R17. They aren't the best but for street driving they are perfect! I am getting these, just cause they are cheap then next year I am going for something much better. You thought about just changing the one out for that? I don't think that is a good idea though.

I was looking at the Hankooks earlier actually, I think I might just swap out for that one for the time being until I can afford 4 new ones when I finally swap the stock wheels out. Thanks for the tip!
Also did you make it out to World of Wheels? A buddy and I went earlier. A lot of muscle cars but there were a few pretty cool gems hidden in there. Funniest thing is the first car you see when you walk in is a stock light pink c5 or c6 (can't remember) corvette.

I couldn't make it out to world of wheels. I had no car here at Purdue. Plus it snowed a lot and the trip up I65 would have been different. . . Either, way there is always next time. Did you see an Orange Beetle there? It has an EJ20 in the rear. They call it the Brumble Bug, it runs in some autox events.

I guess I must have missed it somehow, or maybe I saw it and didn't look further at it. Sounds bad ass though. I think my favorite car there was the Chrysler 300 with the viper v10 in it, I can't believe they crammed that fucker in there.

How big was this show and was it indoors? Cause I thought this was an outdoor show.

Thats the bead of the tire, on the wheel it is also the bead. Sorry dude, you're screwed. Only the tread of a tire can be repaired. The other spots flex too much to be fixed safely.

Shit, I figured. Thanks for the info, looks like I"ll be buying a new tire tomorrow

It was at the state fairgrounds and took up 3 of their rooms - the first part was the cleanest cars and your regular booths of people selling shitty animal t-shirts, then there's a section for ratty style cars, and a section that housed imports and some local booths like IndyRPM and Tru Motorsports. A couple friends had cars in there like a big turbo WRX, an orange and black e46 m3, a 1m, a couple honda hatches, etc.

Yeah it sucks, I used to be a auto mechanic and I saw more than a few times where something innocent and repairable looking was not because of safety issues. No one likes it but because of a few repairs that were never going to be permanent, were treated that way by owners, that ended up hurting drivers/passengers/pedestrians, such repairs became illegal/negligent. Which also made fixing cars so much more expensive

Well shit. Hopefully I can make it out to the car show on the 8th of March. Apparently that is going to be a big one.

If it won't hold air and you can't find damage on the tire it might be the rim.
You said you hit a pot hole. Your rim could have a crack.

Go get it checked by a tire shop and see if the rim damage is keeping the bead from sealing. If that's not it, you are dicked and need a new tire. You can't repair a sidewall leak like that.
