I like to shake it up a bit rather than having the typical Goodnight post. So what would you say is your favorite engine. For the reliability, for the power, sound, torque, amount of cars it has been in. I'd like to nominate the Audi 4.2 V8 that was in the RS4 and R8 because of how solid of a platform it is. I also have a picture of a twin turbo charged Gallardo engine simply for the sound it made leaving the car show. What's yours?

Strictly for sound: Ferrari F355

Sound + Reliability: the current Lambo V10 and V12

Power + Reliability: Corvette V8s

German Version of Corvette V8 (also reliable and decent on gas for being N/A): the Audi 4.2

Efficiency + reliability with decent power: Porsche 3.6L

Power + Sound + Reliability: Porsche 3.8L (especially GT3 spec)

Well rounded everyday awesomeness: BMW S65 V8

Ok I'm useless. I can't pick a fav. I'm jus listing my fav N/A engines and there are still more on my list but will stop here.

Small Block Chevy hands down. Since 1955 it has been one of the best all around motors. great for building for a driver/cruiser and a great base for high performance cars. has won races is pretty much whatever series is has been in. various sizes from 265ci to 400ci in factory forms. very easy to get parts for and rebuild. great interchangeable parts. there are some different variances between the decades of the original small block but not very many. its just one of the best all around motors

ok just ONE more and I swear I'm done

the Ford Coyote intrigues me. never been in a Mustang that has one. but the platform seems to have a lot of potential.

my prediction is that Ford will evolve that 5.0L V8 to pump out 550 HP in N/A trim within 10 years. do i have facts to back that up? no, i'm just talking out of my ass. but it would be pretty cool if they do!

haha thanks

we are in a golden age of N/A car engines

in 15 years we will all look back at the 2005 - 2015 time span and shed tears for how the world used to be. most cars will be turbo charged by then and powerful N/A engines will be restricted to a smattering of exotic cars

I have never owned one so not talking from personal experience.

I thought it was supposed to be fairly reliable for a high-output N/A V8 with direct injection and DOHC. Seems less scary than the turbo charged engines from the early S4s.

Is the 4.2 actually a turd?

I have a nostalgic love of the old Ford 289 V8. My first job, in a garage, that was one of the engines we always admired for reliability and "it can live forever." It didn't hurt that most of the time we saw one it was in an old Mustang.

Cummins B Series diesel I6. It's pretty bulletproof, makes enough torque to winch the moon down to Earth, and is the only saving grace in the Ram Ram 2500 and Ram Ram 3500 trucks.

It's turbocharged, it's diesel, it's an I6 so it's pretty Jalop too I guess.

They're on par for most other Audi/VW products. Timing chain/ tensioner issues, oil burning, variable valve timing problems.

Bummer!

The V10 is fairly reliable though, at least for an exotic?

I've never worked on one of their V10's to be honest. I would imagine it is one of the more reliable exotics though

I would nominate the 4.2 V8 as well but last time I spoke favorably of that motor, B5 fanboys attacked me.

While I like the feeling of a surging turbocharger coming up on boost, it is very sad that N/A engines are on their way out. Forced induction, more advanced hybrid systems, and alternative fuels are changing the way to achieve power as we know it.

Especially because a nice high output N/A engine can achieve massive power with an after market super charger or twin turbo kit

An E9X M3 can achieve 700 HP with a relatively affordable super charger. it probably won't be possible to mod the next M3 to get that much power out of the 3L mill

And take the TT Gallardos. Massive after market power added to an already powerful engine. If the engine was smaller and turbo to begin with the tubing it to 1000+ HP probably wouldn't be doable

Nissan S20 engine. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it also was a DOHC 2.0 straight-6 that made 80HP/liter naturally aspirated and carburated (over 105HP/liter with fuel injection) and had a 7200 rpm+ redline, and more importantly, was an iron block 6 cylinder that only weighed 195 kg! In 1969 !

Depends on the application. This is a tough question.

I wouldn't tow with a Nissan 2.0 for example. Or use a Jeep 4.0 in a pro stock car. But they both have their place.

Kinja'd!!!

Toyota 2JZ for reliability and ability to hold up to far more power then it has stock.

Kinja'd!!!

Toyota 1UZ for being the underrated V8 sister to the JZ series, also able to hold a butt load of power, and also they sound amazing.

Kinja'd!!!

The Toyota 4AG for it's sound.
