Not odd. I wondered the same thing myself.

I read somewhere that transmissions with gated shifters are that way for a reason. Apparently it has to do with how the transmission is setup so the gate is not for show. I read that a regular MT has an internal gate and the ones with a gated shifter have an external gate.

I don't know if that is true. And if so I'm not sure if that means you can't add an external gate to a standard MT without borking up the shifting action. I would need to do some research to find out.
