My parents have the Honda version of the Camry Effect. Knowing their car history before they purchased their first new Honda back in '99, it's understandable why they'd be wary of any other brand, especially an American brand. Unfortunately, that means that they haven't driven anything else but Hondas in the past 15 years. I've been trying to convince them to at least test drive a new Fusion, but its starting to feel like getting them to change their religion at this point.

The reason why so many Camry owners end up buying another Camry is because their only other experience with another car brand was 20 years ago and it was probably some GM piece of shit from the late '70s or early '80s.

It's like my H2 SUT rant about how GM kept wanting to go after the low-hanging fruit of quick profit instead of long-term viability. Toyota is headed down a different lane of that same road to the same destination.

They're gonna keep on pandering to un-passionate car buyers by selling them mediocre Camrys. It's become a joke and at one point will become ultimately uncool to buy a Toyota. Halo cars are there to represent an entire brand and spread the image to other products in the lineup. When you have an awesome super car like an Acura or a Corvette, or even a Raptor, those are the dreams you advertise to people and what keeps them content on buying the cold reality of an econobox.

When the Camry becomes your Halo car, your entire lineup becomes a joke, and that's not good. Quick profits now with no long-term profit and survivability.

I know this is a cliche, but Toyota has made a very calculated business decision to be an automotive appliance maker. The "new" Corolla is the strongest evidence yet.

Think of your household appliances. How often is there a truly revolutionary development in this field? Not very. It's the same innards, perhaps incrementally improved, wrapped in a cosmetically new package. And that's fine with most of us, as long as the clothes get clean and the casserole gets baked, reliably and without much thought.

The Corolla embodies much the same idea with its buyers, who care about advances in automotive design the way most of us care about the latest in commercial kitchen equipment. Toyota knows this. They will pay lip service to enthusiasts and critics, but they will follow the market as they see it, as long as the profits keep rolling in.

I just purchased a new(er) car after 10 years. I decided to go thru enterprise car sales, due to their warranty and friends and family's positive experience. I had my eye on a 2012 Maxima, but I was trading ina 1999 Toyota Solara, so I also looked into a 2012 Camry SE they had(safe bet).

Every time I see a new Camry on the road, while driving my Maxima, I am ecstatic that I got the one I wanted and not the "safe choice".

C'mon Toyota! Live it up a little!

Because what they market is their reliability and durability which, unfortunately, usually come at the cost of truly innovative innards. You could accuse Apple of the same thing with OS X - build a decent model, fix the little bugs, and make very minor tweaks on it for 20 years, selling "new" versions the whole time without ever risking the stability of the platform.

My first car was a 1994 Integra (was my dads, then my brothers, who pretty much destroyed the thing, and then mine). After that broke down, my parents got me a 6 year old 2000 Civic. That car was reliable, but way underpowered, and didn't have ABS. And then I got a '12 Focus. Love my decision, and love it even more after sitting in a new Civic and feeling the cheap plastic all over the place.

Yeah, Toyota continues to find value propositions everywhere, so they put in the cheapest electric motor possible (likely why they have nearly $40bn in cash reserves); I swear my G27 steering wheel has more feel and it's for fucking games. The 2012 Camry interior was shockingly bad, so that 2013 one was the one with the improved plastics.

My 1991 Toyota MR2 has disowned the new Toyota. She disapproves. At least the entire dash and center console is soft touch. And the glove box doesn't sound like it's gonna break in half when you close it. And it has manual steering. And, well, everything.

Now all "insider" info should be taken with a grain of salt but I would say with how out spoken Mr. Toyota has been about new sports cars for the company this car is pretty much a go.

Also, the people who buy Camrys (the fastest car in its class) don't really care if enthusiasts think its uncool, hell they don't even know enthusiasts exist so it being uncool to buy a Toyota means nothing to them. Also, if you want a "cool" Toyota get a IS-F, RC-F, IS350 F Sport, FR-S ect... all are fantastic enthusiast cars (RC-F is still unknown but if the IS-F is any indicator it should be just as good as the German counterparts.)

Honestly, resale does not matter very much unless you are changing cars often. If you keep cars longer than 5 years, both cars will be reaching close to the same point.

If you change cars often, reliability doesn't matter since you'll get rid of the car before any major issues happen.

Oh, and apparently they'll improve the world, just by driving it. Everyone loves to help if it takes no extra effort on their part, don't they?

I managed to convince them to look at other cars for their next one and now they have a Mazda 6, which is slightly more interesting to look at, and a great drive for what it it.

statistic realism aside, the main problem is to recognize that the so called "enthusiast" like us is not the Majority. We are a Vocal minority that's (well following the "stats" above) an 8% that bitch loudly collectively.

While the "Enthusiast" demand Interesting and fun car that goes fast and corners well. the majority mostly cared with how many seats, how big the trunk, how much it cost, is it comfortable to drive, technical support availability, and reliability.

I don't. It's a 2010 v6 that's slow, but not too slow.

Any word on what reliability issues the Fusion has?

Being scored poor in reliability is all about number of reported issue and not scale of the issue. I know most Ford cars these days get poor reliability because of MyFordTouch issues, but I know little on the Fusion in particular. I'm just wondering if they are serious reliability issues with items like the engine and transmission.

One thing I couldn't help but notice was that the vast majority of those complaints were for the hybrid version of the Fusion. This is where most of the complaints about the powertrain come from. Humorously, I saw one complaint about the transmission slipping on the hybrid. The hybrid uses a CVT.

The rest of the complaints were about loose fitting bits of body trim or, not surprisingly, Ford MyTouch. I didn't see any prices in the Cost column for any of these repairs, which is most likely due to the fact that they were covered under warranty.

2013 is also the first year of an entirely new generation of Fusion that has nothing in common with the previous generation. The XV50 Camry has been in production since 2011 and had a lot in common with the previous generation XV40 Camry which had been in production since 2006. Specifically, the engine and transmission - including the Camry's hybrid powertrain - have remained unchanged since 2006. All the kinks have long since been worked out on the Camry.

I also couldn't help but notice this:

EDIT because kinja'd image: it's the consumer complaints for the 2012 Fusion and Camry. The Fusion has 18 and the Camry has 13, which are both listed as very low.

2012 was the last year for the previous generation of Fusion which started production in 2006. By that point, all the kinks had been worked out.

1. That's smug of them; like, VERY smug.

2. Improve the world is very vague. Technically helping your drunk friend by driving them home is improving the world, since I doubt most Camry drivers would cure global diseases or solve economic crises.

Well Motortrend rated the Accord higher than the Fusion on mostly everything (steering, ride, etc) except looks in their midsize shootout. So unless they really, really like the looks of the Fusion I don't see the need for a change.

Hey, I'm no authority on cars by any stretch of the imagination but I don't think it's a bold claim to say that a Camry is more reliable than a Fusion (especially when the data is there in support).

As for warranty repairs, they're still repairs. Nobody wants to have to take their car to a dealer to have something repaired.

As for the kinks being worked out, the '12 Fusion had fewer reports than the '13 Fusion. It would seem that the Fusion, and the hybrid especially which only had one '12 report, is getting worse.

You can see for yourself: gas tanks being replaced, peeling paint, broken GPS, lots of trim pieces falling off http://www.truedelta.com/Ford-Fusion/pr… Consumers don't want to deal with that.

You win for "twatwaffles".

I'm still a fan of "twunt", however.
