I have a weird affliction for the volvo v70r, but the used prices in canada are insane.

then i stumbled upon a 2009 V50 R-Design with a stick, AWD, and a 2.5L engine.
does anyone know if these motors have turbos on them? because if so, its pretty much a V70r ....but slightly smaller and newer.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

that is the car in question

Automatch told me to stay away from the V70R because the AWDriveshaft or something likes to explode. I don't know about the R-Design though.

Yes it's a turbo. No idea on whether it's reliable but they've put them in a lot of cars and I've yet to hear anything terrible. Buy the car. She's a beaut. Also, hi there fellow Canadian.

Well now you know. Maybe if you ask this question sometime during the day tomorrow, automatch will bless you with his wagon knowledge.

It's a turbo, but 227 hp instead of 300 in the V70R.

Enjoy the living daylights out of it. 1st year was my most memorable, even though I was driving a piece of junk on wheels. But that had nothing to do with it. Now I drive a 911 on weekends and a nice E30 during the week but sit in a cubicle all day. You win some, you lose some. :)

You're the doctor of everything, aren't you? (insert oral sex joke here). Are the V70R's fairly reliable then? I've always wanted to buy one if I found one in a manual.

Pretty sure there's more to the R motor than just a different engine tune. From a quick look around you can bump that up to like 275 hp ish with a chip. There's other stuff available like intakes, intercoolers, exhausts, bigger turbos, etc. Decent amount of parts.

The most recent S40/V50/C70 actually shares its platform with the 2nd gen Ford Focus (which North America didn't get) and 1st gen Mazda 3 so there's a fair amount of parts out there. The Focus RS has a version of the Volvo I5.

Any deeper questions let me know. I'm an ex Volvo master tech and current Volvo parts master.

what are the main differences between these motors and the one in the v70r /s60r? there has got to be a reason the detuned it down from 300 to 227....

They are picky as far as "regular" maintenance. Common things are the front and rear liquid filled motor mounts. Right motor mount and upper torque mount as well. The big thing is the flame trap box. Crankcase has to be negative bar. 0 bar is your cue to replace the flame box and both nipples before the crankcase builds positive pressure. If so, it will need the front seals amd rear head seals and caps. Timing belt need changing at 10 years or 100k. Now suspension. Spring seats go out way too quick. Front and rear bushings on the control are very common as well. Unfortunately so are the Four-C shocks. Fairly expensive each. Only other things are the leak derection pump, SAS sensor, cv boots (front), column lock, and other tid bits. Gotta pay to play. A car like that just has to be perfect in my eyes.
Im here for ya buddy. Mercedes, Aston Martin, Lexus duh, and late 80's and 90's BMW's as well :]

Jesus that's a lot of little stuff. I am getting an Aston Martin sometime in life, so you better still be on oppo when that happens. I'll an obscene amount of questions.

S60 V70 R are just a higher boost and mapping AWD version of the 2.5T found in their regular versions along with XC70/90 and S80. The motor on the C70, S40, C30,V50 is the T5 which is a boosted version of the 2.4. VVT is different. Crankcase ventilation is the biggest difference. That will be a big difference maintenance wise. The T5 in that V50 was still used in cars up to 2014. The 2.5T was stopped in 09.

ah,. so to get that motor from 227 to, lets say, 350 would take a lot more then just a chip, intake and exhaust then? a new turbo + intercooler?

Kinja'd!!! EL_ULY > bob and john
02/06/2014 at 23:53

Kinja'd!!!0

Not entirely. Im was never an expert on tunning cars but I suspected with a modified intake plenum, large intercooler, boost control, exhaust plumbing work, and a good on dyno engine remap you can get that 350hp. Not turbo swap needed.

oh and Lotus, god how I loath those things :] I've been in the car repair biz for a good long while now. Trust me when I say that those are the worst, THE WORST most unreliable things ever (not including the Toyota engines).

If I were you I would give the v50 a pass. Test drove one back in the day, it was heavy had no steering feel and the tc vsc couldnt be disabled fully. To make things worse the trans was a piece and it was IMPOSSIBLE to heel toe. If for some reason this doesnt deter you the awd system only sends around 20% of its power to the rear
wheels and adds 300lbs of bloat. Keep looking for a nice v70r they are around.

It's everything else that goes to hell with those things. Door cards, window regulators, key lock cylinders, ALL ELECTRICAL components, trim, trim, TRIM! Power steering, a/c (under dash), and all these little thing that are already worn or coming apart since they were brand new. Along with Aston, the words "Handcrafted in England" is probably the scariest words you want to see on a car. Car enthusiast's panties get all wet if they see that but trust me, run as far as you can if you see that sign.

They are amazing vehicles don't get me wrong, i'd get one in a heartbeat, it's just the little things. It's not as bad on Astons, it's older Lotus (early Evora and down) that you should be weary about. Also, Lotus parts have been on a huge discontinued spree. You can't get stuff for them hardly. Volvo also on the 90's cars.

It'd be fine, just keep a good eye on the little things. Think like Wheeler Dealers when shopping. The driveline is solid and hella fun to drive (once the tires are warm) But yes, those little things are what might be an issue on some, but not all.

Don't worry, you'll be my expert consultant. Expect "Is this one good?!" and "How about this one?!" or "This one is purple, it has to be good" for every listing I send. This is still years in the future, however.

i'm not saying they arent, but mother of god are they expensive (here)

that v50 was 20k for 85000km

a v70r would be same price for double the KM count
