They found the electrons delicious and sent back 18v through the system.
Now I'm very dead in the water. Only 76 components to check over.
Very very basic systems here. And yet it won't start. I changed the alternator and the control module on the distributor, with no change.
Anyone got ideas on what components would cook under these conditions?* coil? fuel pump? My fuel gauge is removed from the car still at 1/2 tank.
Fortunately I have a duplicate of near every component sitting nearby in a box and wiring diagrams galore, but no smoking gun or melted wire. I'd rather just replace the broken part, but I think the aliens must have checked out all the stuff.
*none of the fuses blew
USMB? yeah, I get a few responses, but nobody has had an aha!

You didn't blow any fuses that could help narrow down the path?

Nope, not a one. Apparently an out-of-spec alternator spitting out 18v will just silently fry stuff, as far as I can tell.
18v on the meter before the chaos broke it down.
The only obvious weird bit is the ignition module inside the distributor has continuity to ground, when it's supposed to be just going between the module and then the positive lead of the coil. But that's happening with the replacement module. I have a third I can try, or just screw the timing and swap out a whole distributor from my spares. ($100 pull-apart-fest on a 84 wagon. I'd say I came out ahead)
Specs: 85 Brat, carb, hardly anything electronic but the radio and some relays.

I was curious what subaru she might be talking about as the song came out in 1981. I found this.

That, sir, is the build goal of the hatchback, if I don't gut all the parts fixing the brat.
Complete with fake rocket booster. because thermodynamics.

about 160 a set. . Oh.

That's terrible. Good luck hunting through the wire rats nest.

thanks, I'm starting to think it's the distributor, now it's to that point where it's like pulling teeth.
It has flummoxed me how I could knock out one of the most insanely durable run-on-two-bread-ties-as-coil wire vehicles.
